Throw back to where it all started.

Well I say throwback, I had already been paddling a couple of year by this point and this was 15 years ago!

Still one of my fav shots of what felt like a rebellious period. SUP was free, cool and you just enjoyed the moment of paddling on flat water, ocean or waves.

Back then no leash, boots, ba’s was the norm. We have learnt a lot and the sport has come a long way but I would still happily jump on the water today in my shorts and get on the water.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of heading out onto the sea and feeling completely in control—even when things get a bit lively! 🌊

If you’ve ever looked at a bit of chop or a breeze and felt a flicker of doubt, my upcoming ‘Sea Skills’ workshop is designed specifically for you. We’re moving beyond the basics and focusing on the performance and confidence needed to handle real-world conditions.

We’ll be covering everything from efficient strokes and smart edging to reading the water so you can work with the sea, not against it. It’s about turning those “nerves” into “skills” and having a cracking day out on the water while we’re at it.
Ready to level up? I’d love to see you there.

And when it goes right it’s the best feeling!

Over the years I’d had some reasonable results, even won a few races and had the odd good performance but something was missing. I would hit the wall, make simple mistakes and didn’t manage my races well enough.

For 2017 the shift to 14’ was taking hold and I knew that I would have to make some changes to get the results against a stacked fleet. Winter was focused, time on the water, proper training structure and then down to business.

Roll on that years which was the big race to kick off the season. A stacked field and a proper test to see where your at after winter.

This was the first race where I went in with a plan. I knew my pace, had learnt what my body could do and had a plan to manage my race without getting caught up in what others where doing.

The result was one of the best races I ever managed. Not for the final result but because I did exactly what I wanted and the the result came.

My start was good, it always was so off the line and with the lead paddlers. The settle and dropping back though the pack all the way to 11th. Don’t panic it’s all in hand. 6km in and still in 11th, don’t panic it will happen. 7km, 8km and then 9km -ok time to work. 10th, 9th, 8th, 7th and the 6th. Chasing down 5th all done in the last 3km.

A stacked field, a good result, a solid start to the year. A job well done.

A long time when - learning the lessons and making mistakes and facing the brutal nature of winter racing. Circa 2014.

I still remember how cold it was in a Bournemouth car park getting ready for this one. Training had been ok, I was still learning the ropes but progression was being made.

The result was too many layers and then overheating despite the cold. A lesson learned the hard way.

Start cold, get warm. Something I still stand by today. Finding that balance of pre-race temp and the right effort when paddling hard is a fine balance learned through time and experience.
