Match Report
Market Rasen & Louth RUFC continues their league campaign in impressive fashion with a convincing 51–24 victory away to Loughborough Uni II.
Rasen made an energetic start, with Curtis Spencer taking the opening kick-off and immediately making ground with a powerful carry. Loughborough were soon penalised for offside, allowing Connor Brewster to find touch and set up Rasen’s first lineout.
The visitors continued to apply pressure. After Loughborough were forced into a goal-line drop-out, Rasen won another penalty inside the hosts’ 22 and opted for the lineout. The resulting maul drove towards the line, but Loughborough managed to hold it up.
With both sides conceding penalties during a lively opening period, Rasen eventually broke the deadlock. Harry Lightfoot crossed for the opening try, with Tommy Alldridge adding the conversion to put Rasen 7–0 ahead.
Following the restart, Rasen briefly lost possession, but Curtis Spencer responded with a powerful tackle on Loughborough’s number 10. Rasen were then awarded a scrum after a knock-on, although Loughborough won a penalty when Rasen were penalised for going off their feet at a ruck.
Rasen soon regained possession and launched another fast-paced attack. A well-placed cross-field kick created the opportunity for Harry Lightfoot to score his second try in the corner. The conversion was missed, leaving the score at 12–0.
Loughborough responded following a lineout and eventually crossed for a try to reduce the deficit to 12–7. Rasen immediately regained control, winning a scrum and then earning another penalty, which captain Tommy Alldridge converted to extend the lead to 15–7.
After another Rasen scrum and a period of pressure, Alldridge crossed for a try and added the conversion himself, making it 22–7. From the restart, Curtis Spencer made an excellent break before briefly tripping himself up. Rasen recovered well, winning the subsequent Loughborough lineout and allowing Curtis Spencer to finish the move with a try, taking the score to 27–7 at half-time.
Second Half
The second half began with uncontested scrums because of Loughborough’s inexperienced ho**er. Rasen started strongly, winning a scrum and then earning a penalty, which Alldridge kicked successfully to make it 30–7.
Following a series of penalties and knock-ons, Harry Lightfoot completed his hat-trick with another try. Alldridge added the conversion, extending Rasen’s advantage to 37–7.
After Loughborough kicked the ball away, Rasen won a lineout and Peter Wray finished the resulting attack to make it 44–7. Rasen continued to dominate, winning several penalties before securing possession from a Loughborough lineout. Lloyd Buck then crossed for Rasen’s next try, with the score moving to 51–7.
Loughborough were shown a yellow card for an offside offence but responded positively. They won a penalty and converted the pressure into a try, reducing the deficit to 51–12. Another try following a lineout brought the score to 51–17.
Rasen’s number nine, Bob Timmins, was then shown a yellow card for an offside offence. Loughborough continued to press during the closing stages and scored once more in the final moments of the match, bringing the final score to 51–24.
Harry Lightfoot was deservedly named Man of the Match after an outstanding attacking performance, including a hat-trick of tries.
A huge thank you also goes to the travelling supporters who came to back the team. Special mention must go to the two supporters who somehow ended up at the wrong rugby club, enjoyed a pint, and only later realised that Rasen were not actually there.
