🇬🇧 FACTORY FRIDAY: CAN YOU SEE A PAIR OF THERMAL LEGGINGS YET?

This is one pair of Sub Zero Factor 2 thermal leggings – or at least, it will be shortly!

What you're looking at are the individual fabric panels after they've been cut in our Leicestershire factory, ready for the next stage of production.

Each piece has its own job and needs to be accurately cut before they can be sewn together to create the finished garment.

It perhaps looks surprisingly complicated for something that eventually becomes a pair of thermal leggings.

Next stop: the sewing machines. 🧵

🥾 YOUR WALKING BOOTS GET ALL THE ATTENTION. BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR SOCKS?

When you're heading out for a September walk, it's easy to spend plenty of time thinking about boots, waterproofs and what layers to wear.

But a good pair of walking socks can make just as much difference to how comfortable you are at the end of the day.

As temperatures start to change, the right socks can help:

🧦 Manage moisture around your feet
🧦 Provide cushioning where you need it
🧦 Reduce rubbing inside your boots
🧦 Keep your feet comfortable as conditions change

And don't assume wool is only for cold weather. Wool is particularly useful for walking because of its ability to manage moisture and help regulate temperature.

After all, even the best walking boots aren't much fun if your feet are uncomfortable halfway through the walk.

🥾 HIKING IN SEPTEMBER – WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR?

September can be one of the best months for walking in the UK, but it can also be one of the trickiest months to dress for.

A cool start can quickly turn warm once you're moving, while sunshine, wind and rain can all make an appearance before you get home. 🌤️💨🌧️

The solution is layering.

🏭 A little bit of factory planning behind the scenes…

These are the last Factor 2 balaclavas from this production run, ready to be packed, before we switch production over to Factor 2 thermal mid layers.

You might wonder why we manufacture them together.

Both products use our Factor 2 fabric, and we deliberately keep the same colour running through production before changing over. This helps prevent fibres from one colour contaminating garments made in another colour and keeps production running efficiently.

Once the final balaclavas are finished, it's onto the next batch of Factor 2 mid layers.

It's one of those small details you wouldn't normally see when buying the finished garment – but it's all part of manufacturing technical clothing here in our Leicestershire factory. 🇬🇧

There’s something about September that makes us want to get the walking boots back out.

Cooler mornings, quieter footpaths, changing colours and — because this is Britain — absolutely no idea what the weather will be doing two hours later! ☀️🌧️💨

It’s also the time of year when layering really starts to come into its own. Start light, carry an extra layer and have a waterproof tucked away for when the inevitable happens.

📦 THE FIRST FACTOR 2 FABRIC HAS ARRIVED!

It might not look particularly exciting sitting on the warehouse racking, but these rolls of fabric are the starting point for thousands of Sub Zero Factor 2 mid layers.

This is our first fabric delivery for the next production run, as we begin manufacturing forward orders for our international distributors.

Over the coming weeks, the fabric will move from here to our cutting tables before being sewn, finished and packed by our team at our factory in Leicestershire – ready for export around the world. 🌍

We're proud that after more than 50 years, Sub Zero technical clothing is still manufactured right here in the UK. 🇬🇧

We'll share a few more photos as this production run progresses.

Mention wool socks on a hot summer's day and most people probably think you've lost the plot.

Wool = winter. Right?

Not necessarily.

When you're walking several miles in warm weather, your feet have more to deal with than just the temperature. Heat and moisture can build up inside your boots, while thousands of steps mean rubbing and pressure can quickly turn a lovely summer walk into a fairly miserable one.

That's where a good pair of woollen walking socks can actually make a lot of sense.
