❤️ 🏉 Old Brodleians RUFC vice-captain and team manager Elena Bunbury feels the response to team-mate Ghee Thompson’s horrific leg break sums up what grassroots rugby is all about.

The NC 2 North Central (Level 5) side have launched a fundraising campaign to support the rehabilitation of one of their most influential players after a freak injury left her facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

And while the money raised will help fund specialist rehabilitation and physiotherapy, Bunbury, who was the coaches’ player of the season this year, believes the biggest takeaway has been seeing the rugby community unite behind one of its own.

The scrum-half told The Rugby Paper: “You expect team-mates, parents and people close to the club, but there have also been donations from people who don’t know her that well.

“Our club president, chairman and physio all donated £100 and there have been contributions from players on the men’s side and bar staff as well.

One of our own, Ghee Thompson, suffered a devastating injury on tour and is now facing a long road to recovery.

Ghee isn’t just our tighthead prop. She’s also our conversion kicker, our kit manager, our highest points scorer for the 2025/26 season, and the winner of this year’s Chairman’s Award for everything she brings to Old Brodleians Women’s Rugby Club.

In short: she does it all.

She’s currently wheelchair bound and has months of surgery, rehab and physiotherapy ahead of her before she can think about getting back on the pitch.

So now it’s our turn to do something for her.

We’ve set up a GoFundMe to help support Ghee with the costs of her recovery and take some of the financial pressure off while she focuses on getting better.
