As you may have noticed, we like to use our social platforms to dispel some of the common myths we hear about Pilates!

A common one we’re looking at today is the belief that Pilates is only about building core strength.

While we do focus a lot on improving core strength and stability, Pilates is about bringing benefits to your whole body!

Pilates classes help you to:

☑️ Engage your full body to build strength across your whole body, including core, legs, glutes, arms, back, shoulders and even small stabiliser muscles

☑️Improve body stability; this can help you feel stronger and more comfortable

☑️Improve balance and coordination
through controlled movements.

☑️Improve your mobility and flexibility

☑️Focus on your mind and body connection to improve body awareness when moving

☑️Improve posture.

So yes, Pilates does get your core working more effectively - but it is about so much more than just your core!

Why we love our little weighted balls 💙

If you’ve attended our Mat Pilates classes, you’ll know we love to bring out these little balls. Although at first glance, they don’t look like they’ll do much because of their light weight, the changes they can bring to your movements are actually pretty impressive!

So, what are the benefits of using the balls?

✨ They can add gentle resistance to build strength and endurance without the need for heavy weights (ask anyone who’s attended our classes using them, and we’re sure they’ll tell you it ended up feeling quite challenging by the end of the movement series!).

✨ They help challenge your stability. The extra weight can make your muscles work harder to control your movements.

✨ They can help improve coordination. Using the ball with movements adds a challenge, helping your brain and body work together effectively.

✨ The balls can also help you improve your body awareness. Through holding the ball in different positions, you can gain useful information about your alignment, posture and how you move.

✨ We also love them because they help add variety to classes to keep things interesting and challenging – keeping things enjoyable and effective as you progress!

We have different weight amounts available too, so there’s something that will suit everyone in the class.

What do you think when we bring these little balls out in class? (The blue one in the photo!) Let us know in the comments!

Let’s put the spotlight on the Reformer for a moment!

If you’ve ever seen a Reformer Pilates machine, you’ve likely noticed the springs.

A common misconception is that the springs on the reformer add resistance and are there to make an exercise more difficult – which isn’t necessarily true! 🤔

What can changing the springs on your Reformer actually do?

☑️Changing the springs to a higher (or lower, depending on the specific movement) resistance can certainly change how an exercise feels and how challenging it is.

☑️Adding more resistance with the springs can also sometimes give you more support during a movement - often on the Reformer, less resistance usually requires more control, stability and endurance (which often surprises beginners!).

☑️ Allows you to move onto a different movement. Changing springs isn’t just about making an exercise easier or more challenging – we often change how springs are set up in order to change what exercise we’re doing.

Springs aren’t the only thing that affects how challenging an exercise on the Reformer is for an individual. Your body position, range of movement, current strength level, coordination, and even the direction you’re moving on the Reformer against the springs all influence how challenging a movement is.

This is also why the same spring setting doesn’t always work for everyone, so if you’re struggling on a certain setting or feel like your exercise isn’t challenging you how you expect, your instructor will help guide you on how best to adjust.

What other things about the Reformer do you want to know? Send us your questions in the comments below!

Many of our members come to us looking to find relief from back pain.

As a physio-led studio, we know that for many people, the right movements can play an important role in managing back pain.

Our team is highly experienced in helping people understand what might be contributing to their pain, based on their individual symptoms, so we can provide advice and adaptations during classes to help you regain comfort.

Our classes often help members with back pain by:

☑️Helping to build core, back, hip and pelvic strength - to help your body feel more comfortable in daily life and address imbalances or areas of weakness you may have that are contributing to your pain.

☑️Encourage you to be more aware of your body and develop better control of your posture, breathing and movement patterns, which can long-term assist in improving back pain.

☑️Working on gentle and controlled spine and hip mobility movements which can help you relieve tension.

☑️Providing personalised support during class, to ensure exercises are adapted to help you progress safely – especially if you’re experiencing pain during certain movements.

If you are suffering from back pain, we highly recommend letting your instructor know during class and/or during your initial health screening when signing up, so we can ensure we provide safe exercises that may help you find the relief you’re looking for.

Back pain shouldn’t stop you from moving your body, but it is important to find the right movements for you. 🧘

And please, if you have persistent, severe, or changing back pain, we highly recommend seeking advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
