Why good kit is worth the cost…..
When I look back at my career, I spent a great deal of time out in the elements, and I mean places like Sennybridge or Dartmoor. And although it’s not quite as harsh sounding as say the Boreal forest in Manitoba (where I’ve also spent time out in the elements), anyone who’s been to either of the afore mentioned places will testify to the fact that they are some of the worst conditions the UK has.
The closest I’ve ever been to being hyperthermic is in the UK, our weather system is volatile and a cold wet temperate environment with windchill will kill or damage you much quicker than a freezing dry environment without wind.
In my 20s and 30s I paid lip service to protective kit in the UK - Goretex was taboo particularly the trousers. We just did not wear them - Now in my 40’s my, hips, knees and feet regret those decisions a lot.
Which brings me onto the Mountain II Bib and Jacket from Outdoor Research.
I wish I had this kit 15 years or so ago. The price tag pales in comparison to the aches and pains I have from not wearing good protective gear.
If your aim is to stay dry and protect your mid and base layers - this is the combination. The jacket speaks for itself: It’s a fully capable hardy shell with a 30k rating, that’s pure wind and torrential rain stopping power. 💪🏻
But the Bib for me is where the moneys at…I tested it two ways; over the gaiters as I would if I was just stood around in torrential rain and I wanted the most non permeable outer shell setup going. And then with the gaiters over the top for wading the streams.
Both setups work very well. Coupled with this is the easy on and off ability with the full length zips, the amazing storage pockets in the panelled mesh front and just the overall durability of the kit itself - it’s a career lasting setup.
I know this is a long post but I wanted to convey a bit of a personal opinion about this kit…. Invest in a set if you spend time in harsh conditions - your future self will thank you for it 😉
