On Thursday 20th August 2026 the river levels showed a foot of water churning down the Nith valley after weeks of low levels. I had been kicking my heels for a week at home having a lovely relaxed holiday but now I was itching to fish. A call to our fantastic keeper brought an opportunity to fish for two days and I got into my veteran Mercedes and drove north. I didn't pack very well, I was on basic rations, a packet of pitta bread, some butter and a generous bag of Parmegianno-Regianno - okay not bad but all over the car seat by Scotch Corner - and a 1.5l bottle of Coke and plastic ‘Jerry can’ of drinking water. I arrived at the river late, about 10pm and kipped down in a sheltered spot on a road near Closeburn.
The next morning I got up and travelled to the riverside and the river was falling and perfect. By 0831 I had caught this fantastic fish, which came out of nowhere and tugged the line twice smoothly as it turned. Very quick photo as I lifted it out of the Gye net with iphone perched on a wet rock and he was back in the fast flowing pool.
I hadn't had breakfast, had no coffee making facilities but luckily the village cafe* was already open and after catching another fish - a 57cm bright silver grilse two hours later - I had run out of excuses. It was time for a breakfast and baked beans roll, an Americano and plugging my phone into their ‘coffee bar’ complete with bar stools and wifi details in a nod to the spirit of the age, for a recharge, having forgotten in my rush the crucial USB cable to enable car-charging.
My two day fishing trip had started well.

Time to meditate and slow things down on my recent 48 hour trip to the Nith 4 days ago. I felt it was worth the Long Walk and as it turned out I wasn’t disappointed by my decision.
