Happy Global Running Day — 3 June 2026
If you’ve been thinking “maybe I should,” here’s the honest case for giving running a go. No kit, no club, no PB required.
Mental health benefits
• Lowers stress and takes the edge off anxiety. That post-run calm is real, linked to endocannabinoids and not just endorphins
• Lifts mood quickly. Research highlighted by ASICS found as little as 15 minutes of movement can boost how you feel
• Improves sleep quality and helps you switch off at night
• Supports brain health: better memory, clearer thinking, and more new brain cell growth with regular aerobic activity
• Swapping 30 minutes of sitting for moderate activity is associated with around 9% lower depressive symptoms and about 5% lower anxiety symptoms
Physical health benefits
• Strengthens your heart and lungs, lowering risk of heart disease
• Builds fitness, endurance and helps with healthy weight management
• Supports bone, knee and back health when you build gradually
• Outdoors adds vitamin D and natural terrain that challenges balance and resilience
• Linked to longer, healthier lifespan with consistent activity
Why give it a go today
1. It’s the lowest barrier sport. Shoes, door, go. Walk-run for 1 minute on, 1 minute off. That’s a start…
2. You feel it fast. Mood and energy often shift the same day, not after months.
3. It scales to you. 46 or 16, Deal seafront or treadmill, solo or with mates — it works the same.
4. It’s social if you want it to be. Parkrun on Saturday, a WhatsApp loop with friends, or just a nod to another runner.
5. Global Running Day gives you permission. Everyone’s out doing something imperfect today. Join the world’s biggest 5K, walk it if you like.
The only regret you you will feel is not giving it ago 😀
