🏉 An inclusive touch rugby team that started 12 months ago with six players held its first awards evening last night at a packed Cwmbran Workingmen's Club. The volunteers who run Dragons Allstars put on a special event full of laughter and a few emotional moments to celebrate this special anniversary.

It was such a good party I can't get it all in one story- so look out for a few more updates today (and maybe tomorrow).

Wayne Furley, the club's chairman and head coach, said: "Our club exists to reduce social isolation, improve physical and mental wellbeing, build confidence and independence, and create a genuinely inclusive environment where people with disabilities, additional needs and non-disabled individuals can participate together as equals. Rugby is simply the vehicle we use to achieve those wider community outcomes."

They now have 38 players aged from six to 60 across two teams - one for seven to 11-year-olds and one for 12 upwards. The teams train every Friday evening from 6pm to 7pm on the astro pitch at Cwmbran Stadium.

Excitement built up as it neared 7pm- and the start of the awards. Players and families started cheering as someone tried to get the room lighting just right, with big whoops as they came on and silence as they went off. The background music was Ant & Dec's 'Let's Get Ready to Rhumble' and coaches invited the players up to the dance floor before they went back to their seats.

🥰 The Cure's 'Friday I'm in Love' was the perfect pre-awards anthem and a nice nod to how happy this group of players must feel every Friday knowing it means 'rugby-day'.

❤️🐉 A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR DRAGONS ALLSTARS FAMILY! 🐉❤️

I just wanted to take a moment to say a massive thank you to every single one of our players, families and carers for making last night’s Presentation Evening so incredibly special.

Honestly, we were completely blown away by the turnout. Seeing so many of you there, all dressed up, smiling, laughing and celebrating together made all the hard work behind the scenes absolutely worthwhile.

Most importantly, seeing our players enjoying themselves, being recognised and celebrating their achievements was genuinely something special. We hope we did you proud, because every single one of you should be incredibly proud of yourselves. ❤️

Dragons Allstars Inclusive Touch Rugby is so much more than what happens on the pitch. It is about people, friendships, families, confidence, belonging and making sure everyone has a place where they feel valued and included. Last night was a perfect example of exactly what this club is about.

To our players — you are the reason we do this.
To our families and carers — thank you for the support, encouragement and trust you give us.
And to everyone who helped make last night happen — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 🐉💙💛🖤

Myself, Liam, Leanne and Kristina managed to keep ourselves composed because we knew all the tissues had run out! But yes, our overwhelm buckets did overflow after you all went home, with tears of joy. You all mean the world to us. ❤️

Last night wasn't just our Presentation Evening.

It was a celebration of YOU — our amazing Dragons Allstars family. 🐉❤️

Disability Sport Wales are holding some fantastic Insport Series days this September across Wales where you can go along & experience fun & inclusive sports & see what it's like to take part in some fantastic adaptive activity sessions.

Back in May our team played a match on Inclusion Day at Rodney Parade, Ellys hadn't been with us long & on match day needed boots to be able to take part. Thanks to the on-site kit locker they were able to find him a pair there & then.

The community team said that if Ellys continued attending our Friday sessions for the next 4 weeks, that they would sort him out with some brand-new boots of his own.

And that's exactly what happened!

A massive thank you to Karen Hopkins from the Dragons Community team who visited us at training a couple of weeks ago to present our player Ellys with some brand new boots.

📢 Training Update 📢

With the warm weather & recent fires we want to make sure that all our players & families stay safe. Especially as we know many of you may be travelling from affected areas.

🏉 Training this evening at 6pm at Halo Cwmbran is still going ahead, however please don't feel under any pressure to attend. Your health comes first.

⭐ If you are attending this evening, make sure that you bring plenty to drink, we won't be running around too much but it is still warm.

🐉If you are asthmatic & use an inhaler, please make sure you have this with you.
