RESULT ⚽️

Barrow Celtic Reserves 0-6 Coniston AFC

We keep our 100% record going with a big win away in Barrow.

We weathered a storm in the first 10 and scored our first against the run of play, a delicate ball over the top from Connor Whirity and Riley Merryfield nipped in to score for the second match in a row.

This raised our game, and we had a second soon after, Riley this time turning provider, his corner meeting the head of Joe Wrigley who scored with a deflection off a defender.

Before half-time we had a third, Dylan Lakin's long ball finding Connor, he finished well after the keeper came out of his goal.

Half-time 3-0.

The second half was more of the same, Barrow didn't give up but we were creating chances.

Our 4th came through Luke Oldham, racing onto a long ball from Callum Bircher, the keeper just about reached it first but his clearance smacked off Luke and found its way into the goal from outside the box.

It was soon 5-0. Connor lifting a ball over the keeper, which came back off the bar, and then finishing his own rebound into an open net.

Connor should have had his hat-trick with 10 minutes to go, rounding the keeper and somehow missing an open goal.

We did finally have a 6th with 5 minutes to go, Connor doing all the hard work down the right, lifting the ball over the defenders and keeper, with Josh Glennon heading in at the back post from a yard out.

We could have had more, including Michael Cobb hitting the post and so nearly having his first goal for the club, but a number of positives from the game nonetheless, including our first clean sheet of the season.

Man of the match: Callum Bircher (pictured). Playing Left Back which is an unfamiliar position for him, yet he took it in his stride, also finishing with 2 assists.

RESULT ⚽️

Coniston 3-1 Kirkby United Reserves

A tale of two halves, a dominating first where we had chance after chance, and a second where we fell apart and held on.

In the first half we dominated, rarely letting Kirkby have a sniff at goal and creating loads. We took the lead after 15 minutes, a quick free kick from Connor Whirity to Joe Wrigley, who played a pinpoint ball through to Riley Merryfield, and Riley finished well low across goal to the bottom left corner.

We doubled our lead about 10 minutes later, Billy Tyson lofting a ball over to Luke Oldham, who ran onto the ball and prodded it over the keeper for 2-0.

Billy then nearly scored a worldie, a volley from 30+ yards rattling the bar, a couple inches lower and the Puskas Award may have been his.

Before half time we had a third, Riley this time turning provider with a curling cross that Luke Oldham headed into the top corner for his second.

Kirkby nearly lessened the deficit before half time, a good shot across goal saved brilliantly by Tom Kelly, our stand-in goalkeeper for the day.

Half time, 3-0.

The second half was a different story. We were struggling to get shots away, Kirkby came back strongly, and netted with a freak goal 10 mins into the second half that we could do nothing about.

We had a few chances ourselves, Connor Whirity hitting the bar with a 40 yard free kick, and Riley could have scored again if he wasn't scared to use his left foot, but we spent most the second half defending.

Plenty of positives, plenty to work on, but we go 4 wins from 4 this season.

Men of the match (pictured): 2 this week, with Harry Young putting in a solid performance helping out in Centre Back which is out of position for him, and Luke Oldham who was a threat down the wing all game and capped it with 2 goals.

There are a few changes to the side this weekend, with Tom Kelly stepping between the sticks while Finlay remains out. Scotty is also set to make his first appearance of the season, while David Sewell takes the captain’s armband in Dylan’s absence. 🫡
