Why are we so quick to downplay ourselves the moment weโ€™ve done something well?

After a few conversations with clients this week, itโ€™s made me realise how uncomfortable people are with just being proud of themselves.

Almost every achievement seems to come with a disclaimer attached.

โ€œIโ€™m really pleased with thatโ€ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฎ๐˜บ ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฆ.โ€
โ€œI mean, ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ต ๐˜ ๐˜ข๐˜ฎโ€ฆโ€
โ€œItโ€™s nothing special, ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ตโ€ฆโ€

And Iโ€™m not saying those things ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต make the achievement even more impressive. Sometimes they absolutely do.

But why do we feel the need to justify why weโ€™re proud of ourselves in the first place?

Itโ€™s like people allow themselves half a second of pride before immediately trying to soften it.

As though simply doing something well isnโ€™t enough on its own.

Maybe years of comparison and highlight reels have skewed our perception of what counts as an achievement.

But real-life progress still matters.

Getting stronger matters.
Feeling more confident in your body matters.
Doing something pain free that used to hurt matters.
Doing something now that you couldnโ€™t do a few months ago matters.

Not everything has to be extraordinary to deserve celebrating.

Sometimes something is just good.

Thereโ€™s a lot of reformer Pilates around at the moment, which is great, but I do think itโ€™s made things a bit confusing as well ๐Ÿ‘€

Because Pilates isnโ€™t just reformer. It never was. Itโ€™s a whole system, and the reformer is just one part of it.

So if you come in expecting a straightforward reformer class and then end up being moved onto a different piece of apparatus, there is a reason for it.

โ€”

A lot of this comes from my own background.

Pilates was actually a big part of my rehab after a riding accident nearly 12 years ago (shattered pelvis, metalwork, the full experience), so Iโ€™ve always seen it as more than just a class.

Later on, working in equestrian settings, I saw the same thing over and overโ€”horses being kept fit, straight and strong, and ridersโ€ฆ not so much. The asymmetries were pretty obvious.

Thatโ€™s what led me into massage, and then deeper into Pilates, trying to find a way to actually build strength and balance into people rather than just patch things up.

โ€”

And the more I got into it, the more it became obvious that the reformer on its own isnโ€™t the full picture.

I love it, but the exercises feel different across the whole repertoire depending on what youโ€™re using, and thatโ€™s where a lot of the depth comes from.

Which is why things might not always look like a โ€œstandardโ€ reformer class here.

And also why things are starting to open up a bit beyond just Pilates.

With some strength-based sessions coming in alongside it.
