Tintern Monks CC's first game of the season, in the Forest Hundred Competition saw them travel to the ever so pleasant ground of Goodrich Bison CC. The weather however was less pleasant, and rolling black clouds, mixed with showers and sunshine delayed the start by 15 minutes. With the away team designated to bat first, Tyrone Hoskins was joined by debutant Phil Player to open the batting. A couple of nice strokes by Hoskins saw the score reach 11 after ten balls, before the showers (and covers) returned. With further time being lost, and the weather radar suggesting more to return later, both skippers agreed to reduce the match to 50 balls a side. Blue skies returned, but when play resumed scoring became difficult; some tidy bowled ensured although no wickets were taken, runs were not free flowing. Player freed the arms to strike over mid wicket for 4, and Hoskins (44*)hit a couple himself, plus two big sixes, one of which cleared the trees on the shorter side to complete the innings- 72/0.
A sharp turn around saw a wicket inside the first set of 10, Player sharp to collect and throw to the non strikers end, running him out without facing a ball! Tinterns bowling was equally as miserly as Goodrich, and coupled with enthusiastic fielding runs were again difficult to find, although Wallis & Weller both found the boundary a couple of times to keep within touch. Another Tintern debutant Simon Swindels then struck with just his 2nd ball to remove skipper Wallis, which brought H Mutlow to the crease. He struck some fine blows with a SR of 228, but ultimately there was too much left to do and Tintern triumphed by 5 runs as the heavy rain returned for the final two balls. Next Wednesday will see us host Lydney CC at the Leytons field, 6pm start.
