As men move into their 40s, commonly, testosterone levels gradually decline across the population and we tend to see muscle mass, strength and physical capacity decline with age.
But that doesn’t mean we simply have to accept it.
Here are some results of a good friend who has been training consistently at ION for the past 4 years.
He has plenty of reasons not to prioritise his health.
Two young children.
A busy career.
Work and family commitments.
The same pressures most men in their 40s have.
He doesn’t follow a strict diet. He doesn’t weigh every gram of food. He doesn’t deny himself the foods or drinks he enjoys.
And the gradual change in his body composition has been great to see. The scales and bodyweight haven’t changed but his body has.
More muscle.
Less body fat.
Stronger.
Fitter.
And arguably in a much better physical position at 43 than he was four years ago. There’s no 12 week transformation here. No extreme diet. No magic programme. Just four years of turning up, doing the training, making sensible choices that help him prioritise his health alongside a busy life.
This also highlights the value of tracking your muscle mass over time. Body weight alone doesn’t tell the full story. Tracking changes in muscle mass and body composition gives you a much clearer picture of what’s going on under the hood and how your training, nutrition and lifestyle are impacting your long term health.
Your 40s don’t have to be the start of physical decline. They can be some of your strongest and healthiest years.
