Hugo 😍

So far we’ve done a little lunging and a good bit of long reining. Hugo is a smart cookie, he’s proving very clever and keen to move on to the next task. In turn this means he’s not keen to stand about 🤣.
He’s been here since Friday night and today he was very much ready for me to climb on board and accept someone sitting up behind his ears and just to stand still. 😍

HUGO 😍.

Hugo arrived on Friday a couple days to settle (and I wasn’t planning on flying a kite over that stormy weekend)
Fully tacked up, introduced to the school a little lunge and walked over some poles.
Hugo is 4 and ready to start his ridden career. His owner has done a great start of groundwork and he’s got lovely manners 🥰

Reggie 😍 first canter under saddle. 8 months after he was initially sat on.

Why wait?
Why so long?

Other than Reggie having 2 months off with a slip in the field. So let’s say 6 months of being sat on.

Reggie wasn’t ready, and it’s ok for them NOT to be ready. It’s ok for them to take their time. Just like humans, we shouldn’t put them all in a “box” one size certainly does not fit all.

As someone who backs horses and has made many mistakes along the way, pushing for the end result. I’ve come to see horses that are started slowly, that are given time to mature MENTALLY and physically with someone that has a back bone to stand up and say “he/she is simply not ready” turn out best.

With that said, I’ve had many cross the door here and seen at other yards, who have come in and out in 6 -8 weeks (the “standard” time) with a good head on their shoulders and a good foundation ready to go on and be produced. This is where I repeat “one size does not fit all”

If your pony comes here, my job is to do my best for my client, BUT its also to advocate for the horse. If your horse is not ready I will have that discussion with you. I’d rather take them for 3 weeks to start the walk and trot and seeing some of the world, hand them back and take them back in 6 months for a further 3 -4weeks rather than rushing the job and giving you a mentally broken horse.
