There’s something different about wildlife watching by the sea — you never quite know what’s going to appear on the horizon.

That’s exactly where a pair of 8x42 binoculars comes into its own. The light is changing. The mornings are cooler, the hedgerows are beginning to turn, and if you know where to look, the countryside is about to become one of the most rewarding places to be.

8x32 is a quietly brilliant combination for this time of year. September is where the landscape begins to change — and so does the wildlife.

As summer fades into autumn, the countryside becomes a little quieter, the colours grow warmer and wildlife starts behaving differently. Migrating birds begin moving through, resident species become increasingly active around feeding grounds, and the cooler mornings can produce some of the best conditions of the year for getting outdoors and watching from a distance.

The Osprey was driven to extinction in Britain by the early 1900s through persecution and egg collecting. Then in 1955, a single pair returned to nest in Scotland. As summer begins to give way to autumn, the landscape starts changing almost daily. Migrating birds begin moving through, resident species become easier to spot among thinning foliage, and those cooler early mornings bring a completely different atmosphere to time spent outdoors.

There are few wildlife encounters in the British countryside quite like watching a barn owl quarter silently over a field at dusk. That ghostly white shape, drifting low without a sound — it never gets old.

Autumn is on the horizon

As the greens of summer begin to give way to warmer tones, the birding calendar starts to change with them. Over the coming weeks, we’ll begin to see the last of our swallows and house martins gathering before their journey south, while autumn migrants such as redwings, fieldfares, waders and geese gradually start arriving back across the UK. It’s one of the most interesting times of year to be outside — familiar landscapes suddenly become stopping points for birds travelling hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles.

And this is exactly where a good pair of 10x42 binoculars comes into its own.
