This time of year is always a difficult one, as memories of Liam Canning come flooding back.
I’d known of Liam for many years through rugby, watching him play and coming up against him when he represented his club. He was everything you’d want in a competitor: ferocious, gritty, passionate, and never afraid to put himself on the line. The kind of player who could talk the talk because he could absolutely walk the walk.
In 2024, I invited Liam to represent North Rugby in the Big Match. It was a privilege to have him involved. He brought exactly what everyone expected on the pitch – commitment, intensity and character.
What stays with me most, though, is hearing so many stories from those who knew him best. Beyond the competitor was a husband, friend, teammate and genuinely good bloke who left a lasting impression on so many people.
Today, friends, family and the wider rugby community are gathering at Liams memorial game is down at Colne and Nelson rugby club buddy to celebrate Liam’s birthday while raising important funds and awareness through LooseHeadz. Huge admiration goes to Paige and everyone involved for continuing to honour Liam’s memory in such a positive way.
