FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Maru Karate Kai Announces Half-Price Entry to Prestigious Kodōsai Cultural Event for Basildon Youth

BASILDON, ESSEX – March 12, 2026 – Maru Karate Kai is proud to announce a special community initiative providing local students and families with a 50% discount on tickets for the upcoming 12th Kodōsai Cultural Event. This significant reduction is made possible through a generous grant from the Jack Petchey Foundation, continuing a long-standing partnership dedicated to empowering the young people of Basildon.

Investing in the Children of Basildon
For over 15 years, Maru Karate Kai has been more than just a martial arts club; it has been a cornerstone for youth development in Basildon. By securing this grant, the club is ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent local children from experiencing a world-class celebration of Japanese culture and martial arts.

"Our mission has always been to give back to the community that has supported us since 2009," says Marc Grayston-hanshi. "Thanks to the Jack Petchey Foundation, we can offer our students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in tradition, discipline, and art at a fraction of the cost."

A Legacy of Support: Maru & Jack Petchey
The Jack Petchey Foundation was established by Sir Jack Petchey CBE to inspire and motivate young people across London and Essex. Maru Karate Kai has enjoyed a "Gold Standard" long-term relationship with the Foundation, consistently participating in the Achievement Award Scheme to recognize the hard work and positive impact of its students. This latest grant is a testament to their shared vision: "If you think you can, you can!"

Exclusive Discount Details
Starting Saturday, 14th March, Maru Karate Kai students can claim their discount for the event held this October. Due to high demand and the significant subsidy, tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to Claim: Use code Maru50 at checkout via the official event website.

Thrilled to once again be in receipt of the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts kite mark. We were one of the first clubs to sign up for the code in 2018 and have been successful in receiving it every year since.

Maru Karate Kai receives extension to The National Lottery Community Fund and The Government’s Million Hours Fund

FREE CLASSES TO BE EXTENDED BY ONE YEAR. NOW ENDING IN MARCH 2027.

Maru Karate Kai are thrilled to announce the extension of our Million Hours grant, administered by The National Lottery Community Fund and The UK Government.

In 2024, Maru Karate Kai announced the receipt of the Million Hours Grant which allowed young people in Basildon to train for two lessons a week completely free. This grant, which was originally scheduled to end in March 2026 has now been extended by a further year, meaning that young people in Basildon can access FREE karate lessons until the end of March 2027.

Maru Karate Kai will be working to further promote the scheme across the local area from January 2026, with marketing materials, leaflets and media work taking place from the New Year.

Maru Karate Kai continue to be incredibly proud of our work in Basildon Borough to increase physical fitness, improve self-confidence and create a greater sense of pride in our Town. We are also hugely thankful to The National Lottery Community Fund and the UK Government who continue to partner with Maru Karate Kai to improve opportunities for young people.

Any families who may wish to enquire about registering and taking part in free lessons should email:

[email protected]

The Million Hours Fund is a £19 million joint investment between The National Lottery Community Fund and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to deliver over a million additional hours of youth work in areas with high rates of anti-social behaviour. It gives young people more places to go and positive things to do.
