Kaiku

Kaiku Underground venue and hotspot for music fans, with a hefty sound, spacious dancefloor and a lineup of local and international DJs every week.

Opened in 2013, Kaiku has steadily kept itself in the heart of Helsinki nightlife. Located in an old factory building between the live venue/club Kuudes Linja and Bar Siltanen, Kaiku offers a selection of best international and local guests every week. A great sound system has also always been a part of Kaiku's reputation. Reappearing guest DJ's include Tama Sumo, I-F, Helena Hauff, Horse Meat Disco, Prosumer, Fred P, Hunee, Dixon, Kim Ann Foxman and The Black Madonna among many others. In 2014, The Guardian asked top DJ's to list their favourite European clubs. Kaiku was chosen as one of the 25 venues by Amsterdam-based Young Marco – "If I designed a club it would look like this one. A big wooden box, a great sound system, a Rotary mixer in the booth and working turntables (which is not a given these days, unfortunately). Combine that with a very open-minded crowd and great programming and you have Kaiku. The people behind this place are in it for all the right reasons and pure love of music – and you will notice it when you’re there. "

Illustrations and posters for Kaiku by Linda Linko won the European Design Awards in 2014. Recently Kaiku was featured in Resident Advisor’s RA In Residence series and hosted an all-night Boiler Room broadcast.

FRI 18/9 – Kaiku presents: Danilo Plessow aka MCDE (DE)

On Friday the 18th of September, you can finally hear the renaissance maestro Danilo Plessow, also known as Motor City Drum Ensemble, wreak havoc on Kaiku’s beautiful soundsystem. Motor City Drum Ensemble has been a mainstay of electronic music for the better part of this millenium, and for good reason. Eclectic yet prolific, extremely technically talented yet fluent in reading and leading the vibe of the floor, Plessow operates within that sweet spot where a fun night out becomes something extraordinary.

His sound rests on a foundation of electronic music’s organic roots – soul, jazz, disco – but is always forward-thinking and multi-faceted. Whether it’s the iconic deep house disco edits of his Raw Cuts EP’s or the heavy-hitting acid house melters of his Rude Futures alias, it all gives credence to the idea of a dream dancefloor; bodies drenched in sweat, smiles for miles, and always keeping the ears curious. Opening up the night are kindred sonic spirits and local wizards in organic-electronic synthesis, Maria Wesander and Fleur Amser. Dancer’s delight all the way. In room two, it’s Rakata with Elina, Mayela, Juls Sanchez, and 3rdocia for your pleasure.

Limited amount of advance tickets 12 € via Eventual. Tickets from the door 16 €. Free entrance before 23:00. Welcome!

SAT 26/9 – DWSC: Krystal Klear (IE)

On the 26th of September, the Dublin-born and London-based DJ and producer Krystal Klear is making his Kaiku debut, invited by DWSC. It’s a beautiful match, as the order of the day is dancing first. A prolific producer and a debonair DJ, Krystal Klear’s sound isn’t really tied to any one genre, moreso it traverses the likes of house, nu-disco, tech, electro, and even techno, always with a sly nod and a wink to the sounds of synthesized pop from the ‘80’s. It makes sense that many of his records have been released on Running Back as the label shares a similar ethos, emphasizing the importance of bodies moving together on the floor.

In the past, Krystal Klear has also been spreading the gospel of multilateral and impactful dance music through his own Cold Tonic and KK Edits imprints. Recently he has been broadening his scope towards multidisciplinarity, especially focusing on photography as well as collaborations with the fashion house LOEWE. All this is to say that Krystal Klear’s creative spirit is flying free and it is a beautiful sight to behold, especially so from the midst of a dancefloor brimming with energy. Building that energy up are local livewires DJ Aleksi and DJ OW b2b Victoria. Room two also lives up to the task by presenting the Incendiary club night avec a live set from Rizio as well as DJ sets from Maria Kata and H.T.P.

Limited amount of advance tickets 12 € via Eventual. Tickets from the door 16 €. Free entrance before 23:00. Welcome!

FRI 25/9 – Kaiku presents: Freddy K (IT)

Can you hear it? It’s the distant thunder of The Sound of Rome approaching as, after four years, the Italian-born and Berlin-based techno emissary Freddy K finally returns to Kaiku on Friday the 25th of September. Having fallen in love with rave culture in his youth in the early ‘90’s, Alessio Armani, the man behind the moniker, soon immersed himself with all things techno. And it’s an obsession that hasn’t let up ever since, his deep engagement with techno encompasses hosting legendary radio shows such as Virus – later also a party series, booking agency, and record shop –, releasing era-defining records such as 1995’s Rage Of Age, running labels such as Elettronica Romana and later, after relocating to Berlin, KEY Vinyl, and of course, countless marathon DJ sets, often clocking in at around the 16 hour mark. All this is telling of an undying love for somber nocturnal music in all its deviant glory.

Freddy K is as much at home in the booth as he is behind the scenes, building up young artists and working tirelessly for the future of electronic music. Such household names of today like Donato Dozzy and Héctor Oaks have released records on his labels early on in their careers. Come explore the deeper realms together with Freddy on the 25th, opening up the night are Ronja as well as CEB & Lil Tony, offering something of a sequel to their revered techno all-nighter a while back. In room two, it’s Bassment with this whopping line-up: kixaena (LV), evan wheel, tarozan, Angel Girls, kawaiiigore b2b Scarab, Bandoyliopisto, and Stasi Dian.

SAT 12/9 – BARBITALO: Barbihouseparty Vol. 2

This Saturday, it’s time for the autumnal edition of Barbitalo taking over both rooms of Kaiku. If the changing seasons has you wondering whether to go out and lose yourself in frenetic dancing or begin nesting in a bundle of warm covers surrounded by candles, well, here’s the answer: you can have it all. Barbitalo is a cozy dollhouse vibrating with warmth and inclusivity all the while packing the meanest of punches when it comes to setting a dancefloor ablaze.

The founding members ATI, DJ Snapdragon, and Chimanda are known nation-wide for bass-gracious selections of breaks, jungle, and transcendental techno music, played with flair. This time they’ve invited along DJmirri, Saara Bouzoubaa, Otilia, DJ Sofa, and MORA as well as MC Pippuri who is joining DJ Snapdragon for a special little something something. It’s gonna be a hot one, folks. So come seek some heat in this splendid company, and I’d suggest arriving early as it’s gonna be go-time from the get-go. Riddim is a dancer.

FRI 11/9 - Kaiku presents: Katerina & Ozan

Dive deep into the moody currents of September this Friday with Ozan & Katerina as your guides. Between the two, there’s a perfect balance between inward-reaching journeying and the warm euphoria of the dancefloor, set to an inviting tapestry of techno and assorted electronic delicacies of various sources.

If you’ve been to their Pearl club nights before then you know what it’s all about and if not, then here’s the perfect opportunity. Heady and emotional selections mixed pitch-perfectly, it is music that transcends and transports, opening portals to uncharted territories. More curious-eared music in room two as it’s Kaero’s Alternate Frequency gathering with this belter of a line-up: Kaero, Lempi (Hybrid Live), BERSEiD, Laura MRLS, and MANGOLASSI.

FRI 4/9 – Kaiku presents: Colin Benders – LIVE (NL)

Ringing September in at Kaiku this Friday is the debut of the Utrechtian master of modular techno, Colin Benders. His live show of instinctual improvisation on modular synths is both a cerebral and a visceral experience that beckons the listener with its spontaneity. Rapid tempo, undulating rhythms coalescing with sporadic movements, it is techno music that exists only in the ever-unfolding now.

Benders is a multi-instrumentalist who is also known for his The Kyteman Orchestra project which brought together horns, percussion, opera singers, and rappers. It is, however, safe to say that his surest footing, curiously, is at the unpredictable momentum of on-the-go modulation of tantalizing techno. That is telling of the wealth of talent he possesses; come watch it all unfold this Friday. Opening up the night are Lil Tony and Heikka, two long-standing emissaries of fast-paced electronic music being offered to moving bodies. And room two will be Room Æ with EMI b2b Carlina Carpelan, Arbo, and Sau.

SAT 29/8 – Kaiku presents: Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy (US)

This Saturday, the one and only Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy returns to Kaiku. She is a kindred spirit to any music lover, having led a life in pursuit of sonic treasures with the intention of sharing it with the world. From a youth spent broadcasting on community radios, like New York’s famed WNYU, to her more recent iconic creations such as the Balearic Breakfast show and the Classic Album Sundays, Cosmo’s practice links listening and community inextricably together.

In her DJ sets, she combines them with the bodily engagement of a dancefloor, weaving a tantalizing web of warm, intimate, and ecletic sounds drawing the listener into its spell. From soulful disco groovers to breezy balearia by way of jacking euphoric house, you’re in for a beautiful ride. Opening up the night is local lifer and superb selector, Ocean People. In room two, a bubbly y2k bonanza courtesy of Club Geeli’s DJ Lassi Lassi & CEX.

FRI 28/8 – Kaiku presents: BADSISTA (BR)

On the last Friday of August, BADSISTA, the ferocious force of funk carioca from Sao Paulo, returns to Kaiku. After three years, it’s high time to see what tricks this catalyst of Latinx musical magic has up his sleeve. Looking at his 2025 CUTEBOYZ EP, there is omnipresent the seamless flow of baile funk, house, and bass music that BADSISTA is known for. The release also examines themes of reimagining masculinity and gender at large, especially through his own process of transitioning.

The dancefloor, not unlike the streets of his hometown Sao Paulo, are places of community and regeneration which is made evident through any BADSISTA set. At its heart, its coalescing peripheral trends of baile funk with the pulsating beat of house and techno onto a sound upon which the body acts as a thermometer of sorts: does it make the body move and in what ways? Come and find out on Friday the 28th, as BADSISTA makes the mercury rise. Support comes from some of Helsinki’s finest as Kofu and Wekesa open up the night with deep digs into the sounds of Amapiano, Afro Fusion, Dancehall, and big bass music of all orientations. In room two, Nasha presents you with Youknow, Uni Böllö (LIVE), Sush, Jesse Ukkonen & Hoodipuudeli (LIVE) and Drugsonwar (LIVE).
