Kissing Horse Ranch will be travelling the route pictured on October 20 and returning to Alberta October 26. We’ll have room for horses both ways!

I’ll also be available for first rides along the route and in these areas:

What does a first ride consist of?

A one hour session focused on giving your c**t a quiet, confident introduction to being ridden. We’ll saddle up, get acquainted and work toward walking, trotting and loping under saddle, with an introduction to steering, slowing down and stopping.

Every horse is different. I work with the horse in front of me, allowing it to think, make decisions and build confidence. The goal is a positive first experience, while finding out what comes naturally and where it needs more help.

15-1/2” Jeremiah Watt Custom Wade Saddle

Beautiful custom saddle with gorgeous tooling, barely used and in excellent condition. We’ve owned it since new and have only ridden it a handful of times.

I just spoke with Colleen Watt, who estimated a new saddle with comparable tooling would run roughly $7,500 to $8,000 USD, plus the wait to have it built.

What do I expect from a c**t on its first ride? Honestly, I don’t go in with a list of things it has to accomplish. To me, it’s a bit like the first day of kindergarten. I want it to have a good experience, try some things and give me a chance to learn who it is.

Think about teaching someone to play basketball. You could spend all day explaining how to shoot, pass and move their feet. But until you hand them a ball and let them play, you don’t know what comes naturally or where they need help. Once you’ve seen them play, you know what to teach.

That’s how I look at the first ride. I saddle the c**t, work with it and get to know it. Then I get on and start asking questions. How does it move forward? How does it turn? What happens when I ask it to slow down or stop? If it’s ready, we’ll walk, trot and lope. If it needs more time somewhere, that’s useful information too.

I’m looking for where that c**t is talented just as much as where it struggles. What comes easy? What takes some explaining? What changes when we try something new? The more we do, the more those little holes show themselves.

That’s when the groundwork has a purpose. If I find something I can explain better from the ground, I’ll get off and work on that specific thing. I don’t want to spend hours drilling exercises for problems I haven’t even found. I want to give the c**t a chance to try so I know what it actually needs help with.

A first ride tells me a lot about where to put my effort over the next 30 days. That makes the work faster and more thorough than spending those days on mind numbing tasks just because a program says step one, two, three and four.

I let the horse tell me what it needs, not a recipe. Training horses isn’t a recipe book. It’s assessing the situation every minute, every second and every time you work with them. You make a decision, see how the horse responds and adjust from there.

I’m not looking for a perfect horse at the end of its first ride. I’m looking to give it a good experience, learn as much as I can and make ride number two better because I listened to what it told me on ride number one.

Life’s a dance. Just follow my lead!

We’ll be posting training videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, showing the techniques, maneuvers, and tricks of the trade we use in our training. We’ll explain what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what we’re looking for from the horse.

Now we want to hear from you. Is there a training question you’d like answered? A maneuver you’d like us to break down? Maybe you’d like to follow a series on a certain kind of horse, from a young c**t getting started to a horse headed for the show pen or the ranch.
