Victoria Sh*to-Ryu Satokai Karate

Victoria Sh*to-Ryu Satokai Karate Victoria Branch of Sh*to-Ryu Karate The club has been in operation in Victoria since September 2002. The club chief instructor is Sensei James McCarthy.
(1)

Sensei McCarthy is a 5th degree black belt (5th Dan) with 24 years of experience teaching karate to students of all ages, physical abilities and experience levels. Before moving to Victoria, Sensei McCarthy taught for many years at his school (dojo) in Gibsons BC, north of Vancouver. Our history and lineage goes back through Sensei James to his teacher Shihan Sato, 8th Dan who lives in Vancouver t

o his teacher, Grandmaster Seiko Suzuki of Japan. Our history of teachers goes back to karate's origins in Okinawa with Master Kenwa Mabuni. Our club follows the tradition teaching and training which develops the mind and spirit, not just the body. Sensei McCarthy and his highly qualified assistant instructors work closely with Sensei McCarthy to provide all students and particularly novices with as much one on one instruction as possible. The club is composed of a good mix of students. Males, females, juniors, adults, and families are all included. Whether you are interested in fitness, self-defense, fun, competition or any combination, there is something for you at the Victoria Sh*to-Ryu Karate Club. Please join us for two weeks of complimentary training Monday and Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to about 8:30 PM at no cost or obligation. We like to give people an opportunity to see what we are all about, meet the instructors and ask lots of questions before making a decision. Any instructor will be more than happy to answer your questions. All you need is some loose clothing that is easy to move in and a positive attitude. An important point to remember is that we all train together, so when watching advanced students performing advanced techniques, consider this something to aspire and not what is expected of you. Senior students have trained for years to do these things. It is important to train at your own pace and according to your own physical abilities and limitations. Most folks who try it enthusiastically come back for more.

Congrats to Ayon! You can't see his new belt in this photo but it's a well deserved orange one. Well done!

We’re getting close to the 2026 Karate BC Provincial Championships and we still have some great volunteer opportunities available.

Event Dates:
Friday, April 10 (afternoon/evening)
Saturday, April 11 (full day)
Sunday, April 12 (full day)

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up — we’re in a good place, but we still need a final push to fully support the event.

Where We Still Need Support
Friday
    •    Accreditation
    •    Athlete Weigh-In
    •    Event Setup

Saturday
    •    Admissions & Access Control
    •    Food Services / Hospitality
    •    Marshalling (athlete staging)
    •    Medal Presentations
    •    Photography
    •    Equipment Support
    •    General Support (SWAT Team)

Sunday
    •    Admissions & Access Control
    •    Marshalling & Floor Support
    •    Medal Presentations
    •    Scorekeeping
    •    Photography
    •    Food Services
    •    General Support (SWAT Team)

Volunteers are what make this event happen — they’re the backbone of Provincials.
Without that support, it becomes very difficult to run the event at the level our athletes deserve.
Even a couple of hours helps.
If you, your athletes, or family members can help out, we’ll find a role that fits.

Sign up here by visiting our website or clicking the link in our bio.

Thanks again for stepping up — looking forward to a strong weekend.

There will be no karate class on Tuesday, September 30 for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In karate, our Dojo Kun reminds us to “be righteous and have a strong sense of justice.” This day is a chance to pause, reflect, and recognize the importance of truth and reconciliation in our communities.

If you’re looking for a way to mark the day, the South Island Powwow is happening at Royal Athletic Park:
