The best piece of advice that I ever got came when I had the opportunity to work with a sports psych as a member of the National team. But this is something I wish I knew much sooner as a teenager, it definitely would’ve saved some headaches.

“Focus on what you can control” a simple sentence, but incredibly difficult to put in practice. This absolutely changed my mindset and lead to my best performances as an athlete.

Here’s why it’s important, there are going to be bad teammates, bad coaches, bad refs, bad arenas or stadiums, but all of those are outside your control. You only have so much energy and if you waste it on those things you can’t control then you don’t have as much to put into what you can control.

You can control your work ethic, your attitude, how you respond, how you prepare. Throughout my athletic career I learned that those are much more important to focus on than what a coach or a ref is going to do.

Most athletes don’t need more games, more tournaments, more practices. They need time to develop as an athlete. They need to build strength, speed, movement competency and to get recovery in if they’re going to dominate.

One of my favourite things about what I do is getting to see my athletes get recognized for all the work they put in and see them reach their goals.

This year an athlete I used to work with got drafted to the CFL. Another athlete I used to work with got to play in the French Open. 4 of my athletes made Team Alberta this summer. Another one has tryouts later in the summer. 5 athletes got offers to universities. And I just got to see them sweep awards night at Centennial last week.

For my athletes, congrats on putting that work in and seeing the results. For all you athletes out there keep putting in the work and believing.

It’s been a pleasure having the opportunity to see  growth and I’m so excited to see how this season plays out for him
