Honouring a Maritime Harness Racing Legend — The Phil Pinkney Memorial Stake
Truro Raceway is honoured to host the Phil Pinkney Memorial Stake for 2-Year-Old Pacing Colts on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Phil Pinkney was one of Atlantic Canada’s most respected and accomplished horsemen, a true legend whose impact on harness racing reached far beyond the winner’s circle.
Through years of dedication, hard work, and an extraordinary understanding of horses, he built a remarkable career that earned him the recognition and respect of the racing community throughout the Maritimes, Ontario, and the United States.
A career to remember…
Phil was named Canada’s Top Horseman, earned an O’Brien Award, and won two Gold Cup and Saucers. His career statistics tell an incredible story, with more than 1,650 driving wins and over $2.3 million in driving earnings, along with more than $1 million in earnings as a trainer.
But Phil’s greatest legacy cannot be measured in wins, trophies, or earnings alone.
A mentor, a teacher, and a friend…
Phil had a special talent for developing young horses, from buying and breaking yearlings to preparing them for their stakes careers. Just as importantly, he shared his knowledge, opened doors for young people, and helped shape the careers of the next generation of horsepeople.
To those who knew him, Phil was remembered not only for his horsemanship, but also for his gentlemanly nature, his friendship, and his willingness to teach others. His influence continues through the horsepeople he mentored and the racing community he helped build.
Following his passing on November 13, 2021, the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association renamed the Nova Scotia Stake Series the Phil Pinkney Memorial, a fitting tribute to a man whose passion helped shape the future of our sport.
As the next generation of two-year-old pacing colts takes to the track, we celebrate the horses, the horsepeople, and the enduring legacy of a man who gave so much to Maritime harness racing.
Phil Pinkney’s name will forever hold a special place in our racing history.
