ABOUT CONTACT IMPROV: Contact Improvisation (CI) is a partner/solo/group-improvised dance style developed in 1972 by Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith, heavily influenced by Aikido and Modern dance. Due to the open-ended nature of the dance, each new dancer can add to this pot of creativity. This has lead to various influences weaving in and out of the form. Some of those influences include but are not limited to Tango, Zen, Zouk, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop, Qi Gong, Capoeira, Ballroom, Salsa and the list goes on. This is the beauty of CI: it can offer such an open fertile ground for exploration in expression and movement. Your voice in this dance is what will drive the creative freedom possible at Colours in Contact.

Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE flowing to music!

But sometimes, moving without any other distractions - just tuning into the space, into the energy of the room and the people around you - can be exactly what we need to drop deeper into the flow. Into the connection. Into that euphoric feeling of being in a room full of people who are just there to create, move, feel, play, sweat and release ✨

This Sunday, we’re turning down the music and turning up the listening 👂

Whether you’ve moved with us before or this is your first time, there’s so much to explore. No choreography, nothing to get “right”. Just play 🫶

Next Wednesday, we’re letting instinct lead the way 🔥

We’re welcoming Jazz Kamal (Jazz Kamal ياسمين) of Inferno Movement to lead a special Primal Flow class before our Wednesday jam.

PRIMAL FLOW: Embodying the Creature 💫

In this immersive movement experience, Jazz will guide us into exploring animal embodiment through primal sounds, postures, instinct and new ways of occupying space. An invitation to move beyond the familiar and discover new forms of physical expression.

No dance or movement experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to explore.

Jazz is a movement coach specializing in functional movement, trauma-informed training and energy work. Her work is rooted in helping people reclaim their bodies, develop new movement tools and expand what they believe is possible.

❇️ This is a rare kind of movement experience in Toronto and one you won’t want to miss! ❇️

Then stay for the jam and let whatever you discover carry into your movement, play and connection with others ✨

Whether you’re already part of Colours in Contact or have never heard of us, come join in!

At a jam, it’s common for groups of two dancers to move in and out of dances with others as they move around the space together, following the organic flow of what arises in the room, surrendering to the present, adapting, playing, letting go of anything needing to be a certain way.

This Wednesday, we’ll be leading a class to help you learn how to navigate these uncertain times 😄

Focusing on trios and ensembles, we’ll explore how to stay connected and aware as more people enter the dance, sensing where the group is moving, responding to what’s happening around you, and finding your place without needing to control the outcome.

We’ll also explore how to navigate consent in these more fluid situations: how to notice invitations, communicate boundaries, and stay connected to yourself while responding to others.

You don’t need dance experience, and you definitely don’t need to know what you’re doing. Just come curious and ready to play!

It’s surprisingly nourishing 🫶

This Sunday, come dance it out on the Dovercourt House floor.

Picture this: a big, bright room, lovely airflow, beautiful floors that let you glide, and soft music filling the space.

There’s no choreo, no exact moves to follow. There’s no waiting until the end of the song to change partners, and no one too advanced to want to dance with you.

Here you get to tune in, build trust, learn your likes, test your strength, catch an inspiring moment in a song, and feel the sun on your face.

Let’s leave all the hustle + bustle outside and sync up with what really makes the heart sing.

3-5 pm • 805 Dovercourt Rd, top floor

Calling the new crew! 🤩

Exploring open and creative movement with others can be so freeing, exhilarating, and empowering, but jumping straight into jams or socials can feel like a lot when you’re just starting out.

No worries, we’ve got you! ✨

Come join a new crew of contact improv movers who, like you, are ready for something new, excited to learn, and eager to make new friends.

For 5 weeks, we’ll break down how to enter this space of creativity and play, start moving with partners, navigate consent, boundaries, and touch, and explore movement across the floor, in the air, and on the ground.

You’ll have space to ask questions, try things out, build confidence, and discover what feels good for you, all alongside a group of people who are learning together.

Plus, you get free jams throughout the series so you can put what you’re learning into practice, build confidence, and meet more of the community! 🙌

By the end, you’ll have a foundation to take with you into jams and your own movement explorations.
