Sometimes the best part of a dive is the quiet little star clinging to a rock, doing its own thing at its own pace.

Starfish belong to a big family of marine animals called echinoderms. They love shallow water, so you may have already met one while poking around tide pools. They look simple, but they’re stranger than they seem. Here are some facts that might surprise you.

Starfish have no brain and no blood, instead they circulate filtered seawater through a system of canals that moves nutrients and oxygen around their bodies.

Plenty of species have five arms, but some have many more. A few rare ones can grow as many as 40 arms. If a starfish loses an arm, it simply grows a new one. It can take up to a year, but they’re patient.

Many starfish live around 35 years, and larger species tend to outlast smaller ones.

There are roughly 2,000 species in warm and cold waters around the world, from the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans to chilly coastal shallows.

Starfish go after clams, mussels, and other shellfish, gripping their prey with tiny suction-cup tube feet. Then they push their stomach out through their mouth to digest the meal, and pull it back in when they’re done.

Okay, we got called out last week - rightfully so - on using an AI ball of fish in our weekly meditation video. I admit to getting sucked into the image and not really thinking it through.
So here is a real ball of beautiful fish, doing their bait ball/fish tornado thing.

Some wrecks are visited. Some are experienced.

Resting in the clear Caribbean waters of Roatán, El Aguila is a 230-foot German built cargo frieghter that now lives a second life as one of the island's most storied wreck dives. Intentionally sunk as an artificial reef in the late 1990s, she was later broken into three sections by Hurricane Mitch. Each section provides a generous viewing experience for divers and a lush home for the colorful reef denizens of Honduras like rays, barracuda and seahorses!

Beneath the surface, steel has become sanctuary. Soft corals and sponges soften her silhouette, schools of fish drift through her superstructure, and the light moves across her decks in a way no photograph quite captures.

For those with advanced certification and the right experience, her open holds and swim-throughs offer something rare: a quiet, unhurried conversation with history.
