Qathet Aikido

Qathet Aikido Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art, the modern form of which was founded in 1925 by Master Morihei Ueshiba (O’Sensei).

The techniques that form the basis of modern Aikido are derived from centuries-old tactics developed by Samurai warriors.

Wonderful people, amazing seminar!

Thank you to all members of our Aikido community who came together for a special seminar on Jan 17 at UVic to celebrate the milestone of 50 years since Aikido was first introduced to Victoria by Gary Mols Sensei. The seminar featured instruction by Ishu Ishiyama Shihan, 7 dan (Vancouver West Aikikai). Gary Mols Sensei made a special guest appearance to receive an award of appreciation for his role in establishing Aikido as an activity under UVic Athletics and Recreation in the Fall of 1975. Special memories and a sampling of favourite techniques were also shared by Senseis Scott Macphail, 7 dan (Victoria Aikikai), Hilary Dawson, 6 dan (UVic Aikido Club), Bruce Riddick, 6 dan (Vancouver West Aikikai), John Petersen, 6 dan (Shawnigan Lake Aikikai), Tony Leong, 5 dan (Victoria Aikikai) and Martin Moreau, 4 dan (Rock Water Aikikai).

Properly wearing a martial arts gi involves wrapping the left lapel over the right to symbolize life over death, securing pants with drawstrings, and wrapping the belt twice around the waist with a secure knot (see illustration). Ensure a snug fit, with sleeves reaching near the wrists and pants at the ankle bone.

Etiquette: When tying your belt, facing away from the instructor (towards the wall) is often considered proper etiquette.

Undergarments: It is optional to wear a rash guard or athletic shirt under the gi top for hygiene. Women may wear a, stretchy, form-fitting shirt.
