Salsa dancers believe they need to learn more moves to become better dancers, but that's not usually the issue. The challenge is remembering what you know when it matters most.
Dancers learn patterns in class, practice them with their peers and feel confident. But once the music starts playing, sometimes the mind goes blank, and suddenly you can’t remember what to do next.
Salsa isn’t about how many moves you know. It’s about how quickly you can recall them, connect them, and use them naturally while dancing.
Learning Salsa moves and actually knowing how to dance are two completely different things.
Memorizing individual patterns is one skill. Connecting them fluidly throughout an entire song is another.
Here's my suggestion,
- stop chasing more moves. Execute the ones you already know.
- Focus on practicing fewer patterns until you can recall and execute them without hesitation.
- Break your moves into small, repeatable sequences and give each one a simple, memorable label. This helps your brain retrieve patterns faster and makes it easier to transition from one move to the next.
- The same concept applies to styling for followers. Learn and practice a short sequence of footwork or an armstyle. Apply it repeatedly in class until the muscle memory is there. You can never practice it too many times in class. 😊
Out on the dance floor, you pick and choose the moments to add styling. Follow first, style second 😊
When you train this way, the uncertainty starts to fade. Instead of freezing or scrambling to remember your next move, you can stay present, enjoy the music, and dance with confidence.
At our SalsaFanatics' class, We teach single moves, then connect it to patterns. Come join our class and dance with more confidence!!!!!!
