What is a magnetic anomaly?

Not every magnetic anomaly means the same thing.

A magnetic anomaly is a variation in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by differences in the magnetic properties of materials beneath the surface.

These variations can help geophysicists identify:

🔹 Changes in rock type
🔹 Geological structures and faults
🔹 D***s and other intrusive features
🔹 Buried objects and infrastructure
🔹 Areas of interest for mineral exploration

But the real value of magnetic data isn’t simply finding an anomaly — it’s understanding what caused it.

773.7 line-km of magnetic data. 🧲

A recent UAV magnetic survey using the GSMP-35U potassium magnetometer at the Martello Gold Project in Ontario covered more than 770 line-km to help improve the geological understanding of the project area.

The survey incorporated our GSM-19 Overhauser base station to monitor magnetic variations during the airborne acquisition.

It's another example of how airborne surveys and ground-based magnetic monitoring work together to produce reliable exploration data.

How do you build a high-resolution airborne magnetic survey? 🧲🚁

A recent Québec government assessment report provides a great real-world example.

During a 2024 airborne survey over the Duparquet and Hunter properties, the survey system used three GEM Systems GSMP-35U mounted in a towed bird beneath an AS350-B2 helicopter.

On the ground, two magnetometers operated as base stations throughout the survey, continuously monitoring changes in the Earth's magnetic field.

Together, the airborne sensors and base stations provided the magnetic measurements needed to build a high-quality dataset for geological interpretation.

It's a great example of how airborne magnetics and ground-based monitoring work together in a modern geophysical survey.

Ever wondered why magnetic surveys are flown or walked in carefully planned lines?

Survey lines aren't random. Their direction, spacing, and orientation are designed around the geology, terrain, survey objective, and the level of detail required.

Closer line spacing can help capture smaller features, while wider spacing can efficiently cover larger regional structures.

Good survey design is about finding the right balance between resolution, coverage, and efficiency.

Before the magnetometer collects its first measurement, the survey has already been carefully planned.

New magnetic data. New exploration targets. 🧲

A recent magnetic survey at Yukon Metals’ AZ Copper-Gold Project in Yukon has highlighted a previously untested convergence zone.

The 400-line-km survey used a GSMP-35U potassium-vapour in a UAV towed-sensor configuration, with 25 m line spacing.

The resulting magnetic data identified two intersecting structural trends that converge in an area associated with elevated copper values and surface mineralization.

It’s another great example of how high-resolution magnetic surveys can help geologists refine the geological picture and identify areas for follow-up exploration.
