It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Anne Gillrie-Carre on July 8th, 2026.
For 46 years, Anne coached basketball at the community, provincial and school levels in Richmond and South Delta, dedicating countless hours to helping young athletes develop their skills, character, and love for sport. Her commitment and talent as a coach led her teams to numerous provincial and regional championships. She was also awarded several coaching and leadership awards, including the Basketball BC coach of the Year Award, the Basketball Canada Award for Coaching Excellence and the Richmond Review: Woman of Distinction Award. While the championships and coaching awards were a testament to her success, Anne’s greatest legacy was the countless players she encouraged, challenged, supported, and inspired along the way.
Anne will be remembered for her dedication to education, her passion for basketball, her leadership and her unwavering commitment to the young people she mentored. Above all though, she will be remembered for the love she gave to her family and the lasting impact she had on their lives.
Her sudden passing leaves a profound void for her family, friends, colleagues, former students, and the many athletes she coached. Yet the lessons she taught, the lives she influenced, the championships she celebrated, and the memories she created will continue to live on.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 7th at the Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club in Richmond from 1pm-4pm. Anyone who knew her is encouraged to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anne Gillrie-Carre Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded to students in the Richmond School District who exemplify Anne’s dedication to athletics and leadership.
