Dalhousie alum and Tigers hockey alum Mike Evelyn O'Higgins is a Canadian bobsledder who competes as a brakeman in two-man and four-man events. He earned an electrical engineering degree in 2019 and currently works as a systems engineer. During his five seasons and 127 games playing hockey for the Tigers, he accumulated 22 goals, 14 assists, and 182 penalty minutes.

We were thrilled to welcome him back to Dalhousie this week. He spoke at the Dr. JD McLean Lecture, an annual tradition hosted by the Faculty of Dentistry. This lecture features guest speakers from outside the dental profession to broaden the perspectives of healthcare students and professionals. Evelyn was also a guest at the new Oulton-Stanish Centre, home to the Dalhousie Tigers men's and women's hockey teams. He reminisced about his time as a Tiger, expressing admiration for the new arena. As one of the Tigers alumni who played out of the Halifax Forum, he was thrilled that Dalhousie hockey finally has a home of its own. He also commended the university's commitment to a healthy Dalhousie, highlighting the Physiotherapy Clinic within the Oulton-Stanish Centre, which shares space with Dalhousie Health Services. He emphasized the crucial link between physical and mental health and spent some time sharing wisdom with current student-athletes.

Recruited by Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton after attending a 2018 RBC Training Ground regional final, Evelyn O'Higgins made his Olympic debut at Beijing 2022. There, he finished in the top 10 in both the two-man and four-man events with pilot Christopher Spring. Their seventh-place finish in the two-man event made them the top Canadian sled.

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Judi Rice, a true Tiger and a remarkable example of lifelong commitment to Dalhousie Athletics and its student-athletes.

Judi's connection to Dalhousie began as a student-athlete. From 1971 to 1975, she enrolled in Dalhousie's physical education program, competing on both the field hockey and women's basketball teams.

Judi's connection to the Tigers did not end with her playing days. She was determined to give back to the university that had given her so much. As she once said, "I was lucky enough to experience the academic side and participate in sport. Since it was such a good experience for me, I always felt I wanted to give back to the school."

Judi lived those words through decades of service. In 1990, she joined the Black & Gold Club board. Over more than 30 years on the board, including eight years as president, she devoted countless hours to supporting programs and initiatives that enriched the experience of Dalhousie student-athletes. She was instrumental in establishing programs such as sponsored tutoring and the graduating athlete's reception—initiatives that reflected her genuine care for students both on and off the playing field.

Of all the work Judi undertook on behalf of Dalhousie Athletics, she described her time as Chair of the Advisory Council on Athletics and the establishment of varsity women's hockey as her "brightest light." She took great pride in helping Dalhousie achieve a more equitable offering of varsity sports, proudly noting that the Tigers had seven men's and seven women's varsity programs.

That sense of purpose defined Judi's approach to everything she did. She believed deeply in giving back, creating opportunities, and making Dalhousie a better place for those who followed.

Judi leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Her spirit, generosity, energy, and heart will live on in the community she helped build. We are deeply grateful for all that she gave to the Tigers family, and we will remember her with great admiration and affection.

She will be missed by so many.

Dalhousie Tigers Icons Nancy Garapick and Nigel Kemp Receive Swimming Canada’s Highest Honour

A legendary coach and one of Canada's greatest swimmers are being recognized among the sport's all-time greats.

Dalhousie's longtime swimming coach Nigel Kemp and former Tiger and Halifax Trojan standout Nancy Garapick have been inducted into Swimming Canada's Circle of Excellence, an honour announced during the Bell Canadian Swimming Trials as the nation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

Garapick, who passed away earlier this year, made history throughout her remarkable career. At just 13 years old, she set a world record in the 200-metre backstroke, becoming one of the youngest swimmers ever to achieve the feat. She went on to win two medals at the 1975 World Championships before capturing bronze in both the 100- and 200-metre backstroke at the 1976 Olympic Games.

Her longtime coach, Nigel Kemp, helped build one of the most successful swimming programs in Canadian university history during his 27 seasons at Dalhousie. Under his leadership, the Tigers captured 27 conference championships while producing 63 national medalists, including 19 national champions. Kemp also served on Canada's Olympic coaching staff, coached at multiple World Championships and Commonwealth Games, and was recognized 10 times as Atlantic University Sport’s Coach of the Year.

Together, Kemp and Garapick helped put Halifax and Dalhousie on the international swimming map, inspiring generations of athletes with their pursuit of excellence.

Congratulations to Nigel Kemp and the late Nancy Garapick on this well-deserved recognition and enduring legacy in Canadian swimming.

Dalhousie Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of Jon Greenwood as Head Coach of the Dalhousie Tigers men’s hockey program.

Jon Greenwood brings a decade of high-performance coaching experience to the Tigers, joining Dalhousie after leading the Truro Bearcats to a Maritime Junior A championship and a 14-point turnaround in two seasons.

His background includes time with Saint Mary’s (U SPORTS) and seven seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL), along with national and regional coaching roles.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished in Truro, especially winning a Maritime Junior A championship with a group that bought into the process every day,” said Greenwood. “The opportunity to join Dalhousie and lead a U SPORTS program is something I’m very excited about. With the recent opening of the Oulton-Stanish Centre, a strong nucleus of returning players, and a clear commitment to excellence, I’m looking forward to building something special with the Tigers.”

Greenwood will assume leadership of the Dalhousie men’s hockey program on May 15 and begin preparations for the 2026–27 U SPORTS season.
