We are very happy to announce that the facility is now officially OPEN.

Please note it is absolutely critical that everybody familiarizes themselves with the new range rules. Each range has the rules and individual approvals per range posted on signs at the entrance to the range. Due to the new Standards for Design and Construction of Shooting Ranges there have been a number of operational changes made.

There is an onboarding document here: https://www.frsa.ca/onboarding-to-ssc.html

Most notable, but not exclusive changes include:
Range 2: The covered firing may only be used for rifle shooting. Handgun shooting must be at the posted 25m line ahead of the covered firing point.
Range 3: The covered firing point may not be used for any shooting at this time. There are benches ahead of the CFP for rifles and shotguns, and handguns may only be shot at the posted 25m line.
Range 4: Only rifles and shotguns may be shot from the barricades. Handguns may only be shot from the posted 25m line.
Ranges 5-9: No handguns may be fired on these ranges.

We hope to see you all at the range!

I am extremely happy to report that our inspection date has been set for the 9th October.
While this is a huge step forward, it is not a guarantee of when we will reopen. In 2024 the inspection was in November, but the report was only provided back to the board in March of 2025.
We can only hope for a rapid turnaround from the CFO’s office.

We will be conducting a work day this coming Sunday, the 7th September, starting at 9am.

We will need help with the following:

Following the cleared area through the perimeter of the 1000m and 600m and
Nailing signs to trees every 50m in a way that they can be seen from anybody walking towards the range.
Running a rope along the same path
This is a total distance of approximately 2.2km.

Moving some target stands around on the ranges.

Zip tying wood shrouding to the rebar stands that were not completed on the last day.

Final rock picking off the backstops.

Any and all help is appreciated. The more hands we have come out, the sooner this gets done and the faster we can get an inspection and reopened.

A tremendous thank you to all who came out today to help. What a great turnout we had. So much was accomplished that will really get us moving forward on the right foot.
It was a hot, humid day yet the team persisted in picking rocks, moving target stands, framing the rebar with wood, pounding in stakes, and hanging signs.
A special thanks to our member who brought his skid steer to help out.

Next steps:
• The surveyors will be working on the 14th/15th to mark off the perimeter on the 1000m and 600m.
o Once that is done, we will engage a contractor to clear the foliage along the line.
o Once cleared we will call for volunteers to go hang signs and run a line along the boundary cut.
• One more range day like today will be organize to get us ready for inspection.

Thank you again to everybody for your help and support.

1st July:

Progress continues, but there is still a lot to be done before we can cross the finish line.
We received our new range rules signs, and are continuing to work with a surveyor to mark our perimeter lines to cut them to put signs up alongside the 1000m and 600m edges.

In the interim, we can do the following:
• The range rules signs on each range can be replaced, and the perimeter signs along the parking lot area, besides range 1, and behind ranges 1-6 can be erected on poles.
o This would require a fence post driver (one will be provided, but if you have another one multiple teams could operate simultaneously) and a cordless driver. Be aware the areas behind the range are wet bog lands and can be treacherous to walk in – dress appropriately.
• The target stands and props on the range floors need to be repositioned and wood affixed to the rebar of target stands close to the firing point (to reduce the chance of ricochet).
o We have 1x2s to be zip tied in place, but cordless sawzalls or jigsaws, or manual saws will be required to cut the wood to size.
• Rocks must be removed from the backstops.
o This would potentially require long or telescoping poles, ladders, and climbing the faces. Any other ideas for tackling the taller (6m) backstops are welcome.

Anybody who is able to help with these tasks is appreciated on Sunday, 6th July from 9am onwards.

06/13/2025

• The contractor is coming close to wrapping up the work on a significant remodel of the backstops that will make future maintenance much easier, while reducing slumping and helping maintain conformity to required backstop angles.

• We received a response from the CFO regarding our application for approval, inquiries into the continued use of our rebar target stands, and feedback to our proposed new signage and operating rules.
o The board convenes on Monday to put the fine polish on the details and then we will order the new signs and make a plan for the target stands.

• Stay tuned for a request for volunteers for a range pre-inspection work day, in which we will put up stands + targets, props, address some minor details, pick rocks, and put up the new signs on the ranges and around the perimeter.
o Once that work is complete we will arrange the inspection with the CFO and hopefully be operational within the coming weeks.

In July 2024 the Springfield Sports Club submitted to the Provincial Chief Firearm’s Office an application for renewal of operations, as is required every five years. In November the NB CFO performed in inspection of the facility.

The CFO informed the board in March 2025 of failures of compliance. The board contested some points, while committing to remediate others.

Unfortunately, due to wet ground conditions, and a lack of response from the CFO to our correspondence regarding the contested items, we were unable to remediate in time and were issued with a notice to cease operations immediately in May, 2025.

Additionally, in the period between the notice of inspection failure and the notice to cease operations, the province introduced a new set of range requirements (the previous edition that we had been evaluated against being from 2003).

The notice to cease operations concluded with a closure of our file, requiring us to submit a new application for approval and to start the process again; this time the evaluation will be performed against the newly introduced requirements.

The board has evaluated the new requirements and is working to resume operations as quickly as we are able, but timelines are unknown. We will continue to update the membership on a monthly basis of any updates, should it extend beyond a month’s duration.

We would like to remind everyone that the board are volunteers and negative sentiment towards individuals is not appreciated.
