🌊 Cold Lake Doesn’t Always Give You Sunshine — Today Was About Grit

Today wasn’t about warm water, perfect viz, or schools of fish cruising by. Today was about pushing the mind and body when the lake decides to throw everything at you.

Low visibility. Clouds hanging like they’re ready to open up. Waves big enough to sink a mini Titanic. That’s when Konrad and I suited up — because this is the kind of dive that builds real skill.

We went in with a plan:
• Navigation targets
• Turn‑around air pressure
• Depth limits
• Buoyancy and partner contact

Every single objective? Hit.
Every safety check? Solid.
Every challenge? Handled.

If you can dive in conditions like this — zero viz, waves, chaos, and cold — you can dive anywhere, anytime, in anything. This is the stuff that makes you better, stronger, and sharper for every dive that comes after.

Cold Lake didn’t give us beauty today. It gave us a test.
And we passed it.

These two made the trip all the way from Westlock to Cold Lake to complete their Advanced Open Water with Dunnill’s Diving Services — and what an absolute pleasure it was to dive with them.

Strong skills, great attitudes, and the kind of underwater teamwork that makes every dive better. Watching them push their limits and level up was inspiring.

Congrats, Aubrey and Nick — proud to have you in the Cold Lake diving community. 🤿💙

Dunnill’s Diving Services isn’t just about what we do underwater — it’s about the community we lift up above it.

One of our closest friends is the Lakeland Humane Society, and we’re always proud to support the incredible staff and animals there. Whether it’s walking the dogs, socializing with the dogs and cats, or helping with grounds maintenance, we show up because they matter.

Recently, we learned their brush cutter had been stolen — a tough hit for a nonprofit already working hard every single day. So we reached out to Dynamo Small Engine on Highway 41 in Bonnyville, and without hesitation, they stepped up beside us. Together, we’re supplying the Humane Society with a Husqvarna 525RX Brushcutter to keep their grounds safe, clean, and ready for the animals who call it home.

🚀 City-Wide Garage Sale Weekend: Cold Lake Turns Into Treasure Island

People keep telling me I collect enough fishing lures every year to open my own tackle shop… but let’s be honest, I don’t actually get to keep them. My wife snatches them up and sends them straight to her table at the Cold Lake City-Wide Garage Sale — happening this weekend, August 15 & 16, 2026.

If you’re anywhere in town, you’ll see the signs everywhere. It’s like the whole city transforms into one giant treasure hunt.

As they say, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure — and Cold Lake has some absolute characters out there with stories worth hearing.

Get out there.
Socialize.
Meet people.
Chat up the sellers.
Find something weird, wonderful, or unexpectedly perfect.

Apparently those night‑dive videos kicked off a full‑blown rumour‑mill frenzy — word on the street is divers have been sneaking out to the breakwater like it’s the underwater version of Pokémon Go. Honestly, we’re thrilled. If people are getting back in the water because of a couple of shaky night‑dive clips, we’ll take the win.

After Josh and I finished dealing with a fully involved car fire — magnesium snapping like popcorn, adrenaline somewhere around “NASA launch” levels — we figured the best decompression strategy was to go jump in the lake. Because nothing says “relax” like voluntarily sinking yourself in cold water at night.

The treasure haul was peak Cold Lake chaos: lures everywhere, a Gilligan‑style hat covered in dinosaurs (10/10 fashion), an iPhone still in its case, and enough random debris to start our own thrift store. Forty‑nine minutes underwater and still over half a tank left — which is impressive considering we spent half the dive laughing into our regs.

Wildlife roll call:
Big pike sleeping like they had a long day at the office.
Baby pike acting like tiny security guards.
And a couple of baby burbot doing their best “I’m not here, you don’t see me” routine.

Cold Lake at night is basically therapy… just with more fish judging you.
