A Grateful and Heartfelt Farewell to Sir Christopher Ondaatje
A large gathering of friends, sailing comrades, and community members came together at the Chester Yacht Club this evening for a heartfelt Celebration of Life in honour and remembrance of Sir Christopher Ondaatje, affectionately known by many as simply “Sir Christopher.”
With Sir Christopher’s wife, two of his three children, and grandchildren in attendance, local friends, colleagues, and community members gathered to pay tribute to a remarkable man whose influence reached far beyond his own accomplishments.
From his early arrival in Chester, Sir Christopher developed a deep appreciation and love for this community. For more than five decades, his commitment to Chester and the Arts Community was evident through his generosity, leadership, vision, and genuine desire to see communities succeed.
Sir Christopher was a strong supporter and advocate for the arts, bringing energy, creativity, and a belief in the importance of the arts to the community. His passion for sailing and his many friendships within the sailing community also became an important part of his connection to Chester.
The Celebration of Life included beautiful musical tributes from local singers, including two songs written by Sir Christopher himself a fitting reminder of his creativity and the many ways he shared his talents with others.
His legacy will live on through the friendships he formed, the community initiatives he supported, and the lasting contributions he made to Chester and beyond.
Thank you, Sir Christopher, for your friendship, generosity, leadership, and unwavering belief in community. You will be remembered with great respect, affection, and gratitude.
Fair winds and following seas, Sir Christopher.
Sir Christopher’s memories and stories will be part of this community and so much more. In closing the gathering sang Farewell to Nova Scotia, a fitting send off to such a cherished human being.
Rest peacefully, Sir Christopher. Your legacy will continue to live on in the community you loved and gave too for so many years.
Thank you to the community members who organized, participated in, and the public who attended this celebration.
We are a richer community when we work together.
