The Alberta Cup. How it all started.
The Alberta Cup (AC) came together through a collaboration between the Calgary BHPE Mavericks and Edmonton’s BHE1 Sports, with both programs sharing the same goal of creating more competitive opportunities for young ball hockey athletes in Alberta.
While ball hockey has traditionally been a spring sport, a growing number of athletes are playing well beyond the regular season. Both programs saw an opportunity to build on that interest and give these athletes more chances to compete during what would normally be considered the off-season.
The idea was simple. Bring the two programs together, give athletes a chance to compete at a higher level and create something that could continue to grow year after year.
What started with U11, U13 and U15 has now expanded to include U18 as we head into our second year of the AC.
In just one month, these teams will go head-to-head in a best two-out-of-three series, battling for the title of Alberta Cup Champions in their respective divisions.
And while the AC started between two programs, there’s definitely room for it to grow. We’d love to connect with other leagues and programs interested in exhibition games, competitive matchups or potentially becoming part of future Alberta Cup events.
The AC is an opportunity to bring athletes, teams and programs together while continuing to grow the game across Alberta and Canada.
The countdown is on! With more athletes, another division and a championship on the line, we can’t wait to see what this year’s competition brings!
