Most people have seen Kathak. Very few know what they were actually watching.

Kathak is one of India’s eight classical dance forms, and it carries over a thousand years of history in every movement. It was born in temple courtyards, refined in royal courts, and passed down through an unbroken chain of Gurus and Shishya that continues to this day.

At Lay-Tal, we teach Kathak the way it was meant to be taught rooted in the Jaipur Gharana tradition, grounded in classical technique, and alive with the culture it has always carried.

Kathak was never written down, it was breathed, one generation into the next.

Performing a Tarana composed by my Guru, alongside her, this is what Guru-Shishya Parampara truly feels like. Not just steps learned, but a lineage lived. Kathak carries within it the courts, the temples, the poetry of saints, and the devotion of countless dancers who chose to pass it forward rather than let it fade.

Every taal we strike together is a thread connecting centuries of this living heritage to the present moment.

Taal is not the background. It is the argument between the dancer’s feet and the tabla, between silence and sound, between stillness and storm.
