WALLAROO SAILING CLUB NEWS

APRIL 2026

RADIO CONTROL YACHTS: 2025/26 Summer Season has concluded with the Championship
being won by Des Westlake, 3 points clear of Bob Petts. Division 2 was taken out by Murray Flint,
12 points clear of Peter Carty.
DF 95 Teams event was recently held at Lightsview with our team from Wallaroo winning the event
and earning the privilege of defending the title here on their home course next season.
Congratulations to team WSC Radio Control for their teams title.
Also a huge congratulations to Des Westlake and the crew for hosting a successful DF65/DF95
State Championship in mid March. The event ran very well with a number of comments of
appreciation coming back from those competing.
CRUISING DIVISION: Great to have a couple of our cruising trailerable yachts out on the course
racing for our last day of the Summer Season. This adventurous mob will continue to organise some
sailing during the Winter while most of the dinghy sailors will have their boats packed away for the
Winter.
OFF BEACH SAILING: Well that’s a wrap for the 2025/26 season. Quite a few days were blown out
especially early in the season but we finished with some recent great days. As with the radio control
division, the off beach dinghy crews were very active representing the club in a number of State and
National events. Great to have so much representation from a relatively small group. Most recent

and continuing on in May, Wayne Barnett and LG represented in the Fireball State Championship in
Adelaide.
Four crews competed in the Tasar National Championship that was hosted here at Wallaroo in
January with Kym Flint and Karen Westlake finishing in a fantastic 6 th position in the fleet of 36.
Peter Elverd also competed at Port Stephens in the ILCA National Masters in February.
Club Championship in division 1 was taken out by Peter Elverd in his Laser Y Knot. Division 2 was
taken out by Kym Flint and Karen Westlake in the Tasar In The Groove.
SAIL TRAINING: Planning is underway for next season where we may even have an accredited sail
training person on board to head up the group. Stay tuned for developments on this front later this
year.
CLOSING DAY: Fantastic weather prevailed for Closing Day last Sunday. Trailerable Yachts joined
in with some of our dinghy fleet for a pleasant stern chaser race which was won by Peter Elverd in
his Laser. Post race drinks and eats were enjoyed in the sunshine on the club deck by a great cross
section of our Membership where some of us were lucky enough to help themselves to various raffle
prizes that were donated by various sponsors. Special mention and thank you to Russell from
Yorkes Meat and Smallgoods for supplying meat, cheese and cracker platters for the post race get
together on Closing Day and several other afternoons throughout the Season.
VOLUNTEERS: Biggest thank you and recognition goes out to our solid group of volunteers. The
involvement of all our volunteers in rescue/start boats, bar area, club maintenance and Committee
roles is truly valued and makes Wallaroo Sailing Club a vibrant venue in a climate where many
similar clubs continue to struggle. The help given especially toward the January National Tasar
Championship by our Members was amazing. Thank you again to all involved throughout the
Season.
FRIDAY NIGHT MEALS: Good numbers are still rolling in for Friday Night Meals at the Club so
please remember to book to ensure you have a table. Call Margaret 0419 178 988 for all bookings.
The club will be open for Friday night Meals every Friday until June. During the months of June, July
and August we will be open only on the first Friday of each of those months.
CLUB ROOMS HIRE: The sailing club is available for function hire with or without bar and kitchen
facilities. Enquires for hire availability can be made on the Club phone 0493 966 458.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND SEASON TROPHY PRESENTATION: The date has been set
as Sunday May 24 th for this year’s Annual General meeting and the 2025/26 Season trophy
presentation. Starting time for the Annual General Meeting will be 11.00am and not 1.00pm as
previously advised with the presentation to follow the meeting. Nomination forms for Committee
positions will be made available prior to that date and we welcome nominations from anyone
wishing to have an involvement in the future of the Wallaroo Sailing Club.

Cheers for now.
WSC Committee.

Hi All

This Sunday April 12th, Wallaroo Sailing Club will hold an open social sailing day from 10.00am to 2.00pm. There will be no formal racing, just a variety of boats for anyone interested to come down and have a sail.

Catamarans and single hull dinghies will be available to just get out and have a fun sail. We especially encourage any of our sail training group to come down and join in along with parents that might also want to get on the water and have a go. The day is open to all. Just bring a change of clothing along with some warm gear that can get wet. We can provide buoyancy vests to those that require them. All sailing will be conducted with an experienced Club Member.

For anyone that is interested in having a go at Radio Control Sailing, Des Westlake will be available at the Radio Control Sailing area on Inverness Way at the Wallaroo Marina between 10.00am and 12.00noon. For those interested or any questions Des can be contacted on 0467 076 356.

Bar will be open for those wishing to sit back on the deck before or after a sail and enjoy the beachside environment.

Closing Day for the 2025/26 Off Beach Season will be Sunday April 19th with a stern chaser race at about 1.30pm. More details on this will be available early next week. Radio Control Winter racing continues through to the end of September 2026.

Look forward to seeing you on the water.
Trevor Hilleard on behalf of WSC Committee.
