LIVE N LEARN

We posted this pic a while back claiming this particular board was the first "Thruster" to win a contest with Warren Powell at the Aussie junior titles early in 81. Nick Carroll correctly pointed out that the Aussie titles were held in May 81 with Simon having already won Bells and the Coke contest on 3 fins. The board was super early in the history of "Thrusters" a fact bourne out by the hand painted 3 logos the board. Simon reckons it might be about the 3rd board he ever made with 3 fins and delivered it to Powelly in the summer of 1980-81. The board has a pretty cool competition record with Warren finishing 6th at the Pro Juniors early in 81 (the source of the confusion), he won the Victorian juniors on the board, surfed it through to the quarter finals at Bells and then won the Aussie junior titles on it as well. Great history. We had a funny conversation with the folk who own the board, when they first contacted us looking to loan it to the museum. They had advertised it for sale not knowing its history and started getting offers 10 times what they were expecting . . . they were kind of in shock when they first rang us. Anyhoo . . . stoked to have this storied board on display, stoked also to reunite Simon with the board as well as a previous owner Andy Robbo. Nice! Sometimes we are suspicious with bright shiny vintage boards that look like they have never been surfed, not so with this board it has been well used and features lots of battle scars, but still a pretty epic piece of Australian surfing history

FROM THE VAULT

Got the torch and went in search of this bit of surfing history yesterday. The Coke Classic was an epic Sydney based pro comp that was an integral part of the Australian leg of surfing's world tour. Promoted as "The World's richest surfing competition" it got off to a pretty amazing start with MP, Lynchy, MR and Simon Anderson winning the first few events. Then Came that epic goofy tubeshooting final between Wayne Lynch and Larry Blair. Lynchy looked to have it wrapped up until Larry did a disappearing act only to pop out of the end of a backlit barrel . . . live on TV! Pretty cool list of winners representing top shelf surfing talent. WA phenom Taj Burrow was the last Coke winner, a contest gone . . . but not forgotten. Hmmm . . . wonder where the women's winners are at?
From memory this came to us via a surfing themed bar on the gold coast that closed and CUB auctioned off all the goodies inside. Peter Troy smartly pointed out that some of that stuff should go to a surfing museum, and well we were the only one Oz at the time, nice work PT.
