Pas de bo***ée piqué & glissades 🩰

Two beautiful travelling steps that are all about lightness, precision and flow.

For pas de bo***ée piqué, think clean, quick footwork and stepping onto a straight supporting leg.

For glissades, brush through the floor, travel across rather than up, and land softly.

These four movements all appear in this exercise, and understanding the purpose and action of each one can make such a difference to your technique!

FRAPPÉ

Meaning “to strike”, frappé develops speed, strength and precision in the lower leg and foot. From a flexed or pointed position at the ankle, the working leg strikes sharply out to the front, side or back.

Think quick, strong and precise, preparing the legs and feet for allegro and jumps.

BALLONNÉ

Ballonné has a lovely rounded, buoyant quality. At the barre, the working leg extends out and then draws back in towards the supporting leg, usually to cou-de-pied (ankle bone height) or retiré (lifted underneath the knee).

Think of the leg reaching out and gathering back in, while maintaining turnout and control.

CLOCHE

Cloche means “bell” in French, which gives you the perfect little ding d**g image for this movement! 🔔

The working leg swings freely through first position, travelling from devant to derrière and back again, just like the pendulum of a bell.

Keep the supporting side lifted and allow the leg to swing freely from the hip without disturbing the upper body.

PETIT BATTEMENT

Meaning “small beating”, petit battement is a quick movement of the lower leg around the supporting ankle.

The working foot moves rapidly from front to back while the thigh and knee remain beautifully still and turned out.

Think: quiet thigh, quick lower leg!

All four movements are building the things we need when we move away from the barre and into the centre: speed, coordination, strength, articulation and control.

Wondering which arms to use in a travelling waltz? 🩰

Pro Ballet Tip👇

1️⃣ For the first waltz travelling forward, raise the arm that is furthest away from the audience, with the palm facing down. The other arm is to your side in a second position

2️⃣ For the second waltz, extend the same arm forward and slightly across the body, with the palm facing up.
