This year we are proudly supporting Jared’s 949 - an organisation lead by Steve’s wife Kate in honour and loving memory of her late son Jared.
We asked Kate to share a bit about Jared’s 949:
Jared's 949 began in 2024 with the simple goal of helping others to know that they are good enough to stay another day. Jared's last words were written simply...."I'm sorry I'm not good enough, Mum."
A simple idea to honour Jared by organising a 9km walk for his mates to raise funds for Lifeline and recognise the 9 Australian lives that are lost to su***de every day has rapidly grown into a country community wellbeing initiative. It aims simply to keep us connecting, checking in and stepping up to listen to our mates.
Guest speakers and wellbeing programs for school children and adults are increasingly being introduced to the Upper Hunter as funds become available, and Wellbeing chairs are donated throughout the state, made lovingly by the wonderful members of the Denman Men's Shed.
Jared was restoring a beautiful garden seat at the time of his loss, to be given to his infant son one day. He wrote this message.... "This chair is to sit and reflect. Many before us have fought battles and got through. Stay calm. Breathe deep. Tomorrow is a new day...Jared Jones 1986-2024"
Jared didn't get to have a new day...but his loss will help others to have and give hope.
