Around Mission Beach there are approximately 120 southern cassowaries, a thousand tourists, and a council sign at the entrance to every town asking drivers to slow down. The signs are mostly working.

The cassowary is a flightless bird. Six feet tall. A horn on the head. A dagger on each foot. They cross the road at its own pace.
