You’re human 🩷

When did you learn that you’re not a reliable witness to your own inner experience?

And what has that meant as you’ve moved through life?

Chances are it’s lead you to push past your capacity repeatedly (and maybe with a pained smile on your face).

Episode 339 of SelfKind - a podcast for Highly Sensitive People - is up now and it’s an important one. I share a lot from my own experiences in the hopes that you hear something that lands for you.

Available now in all the podcast places and up on YT. Links in bio.

The perfectionist loop is an easy place to get trapped because the promise is so compelling: acceptance, belonging, love … But what perfection never tells you is that it’s a false promise based on an idea that humans *can* be perfect (we cannot - we are imperfect by our very nature!).

It can be an exhausting loop and, as highly sensitive people, one we’re intimately familiar with.

This is a little clip from Episode 338 of SelfKind - a podcast for Highly Sensitive People. You can listen into the full episode wherever you get your podcasts. It’s also in video form over on YT.

The paradox of an inner perfectionist who just wants you to be safe … but that ultimately keeps you from authentic connection 😬

What are your experiences with your inner perfectionist as a highly sensitive person?

The research says highly sensitive people are more likely to be perfectionists. Specifically, we’re more likely to experience what’s called ‘socially prescribed’ perfectionism - the kind of perfectionism that starts with an idea that you can and should be capable of a wildly high standard.

Every human will eventually fall short of these ideals precisely because we’re human. That typically doesn’t stop us from trying though … and from continuing to measure ourselves internally against an unattainable ideal.

Self-compassion says: it’s painful to acknowledge that I can’t reach or sustain the standard I think I have to in order to be good and accepted. I’m choosing to give myself grace and kindness in my human imperfection - NOT to compound this pain with heapings of self-criticism and shame.

A migraine on the weekend wiped me out. The messy house stayed messy. I feel no guilt.

Being a sensitive person can mean variable energy and, for many of us, dealing with chronic conditions, pain and wobbly health stuff. On top of that, it’s common to feel epic levels of guilt for not being able to stay on top of everything or to experience dips in capacity that don’t match the to do list.

But how’s the guilt and shame driven strategy working out?

It never worked for me. It just dug me deeper and deeper into a place of self-criticism and frustration.

Self-kindness, compassion and having an honest understanding of yourself? That’s how we move away from constant guilt to a place where self-care is your non-negotiable, not the dishes.

There’s still time to join me for SelfKind nurture - 12 weeks of support to nurture yourself and your sensitivity. Details via the link in my bio or send me a DM. We start Sunday 2nd August 2026 so don’t wait too long if you think this could be the right fit for you 🩷

This is the fear of so many sensitive folk, and it’s founded in real data (sadly). Most of us HAVE been told that we’re too sensitive, too much, too difficult. And so what have we done in response? Pretended to be comfortable, easy going and unbothered when we were absolutely none of those things.

But you know what? Your needs (sensory or otherwise) are not evidence of being too much or too difficult … and in ignoring or minimising them you might be missing an opportunity to feel more comfortable in your own skin.

That doesn’t mean you need new blue glasses (unless you do!) but it is an invitation to be honest about your needs and preferences because you’re allowed to look after yourself 🩷

It won’t solve everything, but it’s certainly not nothing.

Softening what you can soften, reminding yourself that there’s solid ground beneath your feet, taking a deep breath … these simple acts can make a big difference to a sensitive nervous system.

These little moments are opportunities to remind your body and nervous system that you’re safe (or safe enough); something your nervous system is always looking for evidence of.
