Calling all rowers and resting rowers who have been challenged by cancer of any sort - we are so excited to have the pink boat on the water at this year’s Outback Rowing Regatta, and need your support to fill these very special 8 seats.

After meeting with the World Survivors Network, Beth Kohl, at Henley Masters earlier this year, our ORA board member, Toby Ford, agreed we needed involve as many cancer survivors as possible in rowing due to it’s wide range of benefits, both for physical and mental health, and the community support. Since then, ORA has connected with from Lake Macquarie to bring the beautiful pink boat to this year’s Outback Rowing Regatta.

Named after Amanda Jessop Shaw, who is sadly no longer with us, it is a reminder that we need to make every day count. If you’ve been touched by cancer in any way, and would like to join the pink boat in this year’s Regatta, please comment below or DM us. It’s a special cause close to all of us and one that we feel is important to represent in our community.

BARCALDINE ROWING 🐑 Brought together by an avid rower and now the Outback Rowing president, David Counsell, you can find the Barcaldine rowing club training at the local water ski park on Saturdays and Sundays mornings. Lucky for them, the water ski park makes for the perfect 1000m, 3 lane international rowing course!

It may be a double skull, or a quad skull, but whoever is in town and keen to get out on the water will come together. Interested in joining? 👇🏼Comment below and we’ll add you to WhatsApp group! In true fashion, everyone has a coffee on the veranda of the Shakespeare Hotel for a good yarn after training, before getting into the rest of the weekend activities.

They’ll be putting their best foot forward for the upcoming Regatta, so let’s see if the locals can take home the win!

We’re proud to have Mort & Co as the major sponsor of this year’s Australian Outback Rowing Regatta. From the first handshake agreement, Mort & Co and Outback Rowing have a shared passion for making sure a mate is doing well. Be that out on the land, or in the boat, we believe that rowing brings the opportunity of belonging, mateship and an opportunity for wellbeing when times can be tough.

Sharing in these values, the backing of Mort & Co for this year’s Outback Rowing Regatta provides an opportunity to give back to the communities who continue to weather the unpredictable ride that comes with life in the outback – which is close to home for Mort & Co. Meanwhile, it allows Outback Rowing to bring together the outback community through our annual regatta - something that wouldn’t be possible without their generous support and that of all our sponsors.

Mort & Co will be joining us at this year’s regatta in Barcaldine and Longreach. Stop in for a yarn, show your support and maybe there’s an opportunity for the Mort crew to swap moving cattle for rowing down the Thomson for a weekend.

TOOWOOMBA ROWING ⛰️ This year, 3 Toowoomba locals joined a Brisbane crew to become part of Outback Rowing Australia. A crew of 8, some beginners, some returning after years away, training together weekly.

Then they thought: why not bring rowing home to Toowoomba? 🌊

They brought the crew to Cooby Dam, then hosted a Come & Try Day for the community (windy weather and all!). Now they row at Cooby Dam monthly, welcoming return-to-rowers to jump in a boat and join the fun — followed by well-earned debriefs at The Chocolate Cottage, Highfields. ☕️

Huge thanks to Muz for organising boats, coaching, and making it all happen every month. 🙌

They’re now working with Toowoomba Regional Council to make rowing a permanent fixture at Cooby Dam, with hopes to bring in learners, return-to-rowers, and even schools.

It’s early days, but Toowoomba Rowing Club is now on Facebook & Instagram, plus a WhatsApp group for anyone keen to get involved (comment below and we’ll add you in!).

Right now, they’re training hard and counting down to the Outback Rowing Regatta in Longreach this October! 🏆

This is only the beginning. 💙

OUTBACK ROWING 🌾 So many of us did rowing at high school, only to hang up the zootsuit for good after the grade 12 head of river. But what we realised 5 years ago was that there is nothing stopping us from getting back on the water, even in the country. We’ve got access to dams and rivers, we’ve got boats to use (shout out to Murray!), and we’ve got people wanting something different to tennis to keep fit.

What we didn’t realise was the incredible community we’d build along the way. Bringing together like-minded people of all ages, all skill sets, and all locations to find moments of joy, clarity and a little competitiveness in regions we can’t just go to the local boat shed. Training looks different, the scenery is different, and the drive in looks different, but out on the water the moments of mental clarity and a sense of belonging to a team are all the same.

VIKINGS ROWING 📍 Based out of West End, Brisbane, the Vikings rowing club has been going since 2012. 🌅Originally starting as a group of Churchie Old Boys' Association wanting to get back in the boat, you’ll now catch them on the river training on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday, with gym day on Wednesdays. Vikings is a mens masters club, so if you feel you fit the bill and would like to get back in the boat, comment below 👇🏼 and we will send you details to join!

This club brings so much more than just rowing to its community. Every training session is an opportunity to belong to a great group of guys, improve your fitness and the benefits that come with it (endorphins), enjoy a bit of competitiveness among your mates, and last but not least, enjoy coffee ☕️ , cake, or a bowl of Toby’s Porridge at the local cafe afterwards and catch up with your mates. It’s a meaningful community, and has played a crucial part in getting Outback Rowing Australia up and running.

🌾 They’ll be bringing their A-team to the regatta - can the masters crew take on the young ones from the west, and walk away with a win?
