Your workout doesn't always look like a gym. Sometimes it looks like this.
I'm lucky my job keeps me moving. Lifting, pushing, hauling, building. By the time the day is done, my body has worked. And I count every single bit of it.
But here's what I'd do if I had an office job:
- Walk before or after work
- Take the stairs every time (if there are stairs)
- Park further away
- Do a 20 minute workout before work. Because movement doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to happen.
I've also made real changes to my spare time. I've cut out the mindless nighttime scrolling that used to swallow my evenings. That time now belongs to catching up on house duties, stretching or reading a book. It's not always long. But it's consistent, and consistency is everything.
And here's why it actually matters, beyond the aesthetics, beyond the before and after photos:
- Exercise is an investment in the person you'll be in 10, 20, 30 years
- It protects your bones
- It keeps your joints moving
- It reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline.
- It lifts your mood, sharpens your mind, and helps you sleep
- It means you can still get on the floor and play with your grandkids
- It means your body carries you through life instead of holding you back.
We don't exercise just to look good. We do it so we can actually LIVE, fully, actively, independently, for as long as possible.
So whatever your version of movement looks like today, own it. The wheelbarrow, the walk, the 15 minute workout between meetings. It all adds up. It all counts.
