Finally — we're putting things back instead of pulling them off! 🔨

With the damaged timber removed, the rebuild of Chugga is well underway.

New timber is being shaped and fitted through the gunwales and cabin structure, with plenty of measuring, fitting, gluing, clamping and fairing along the way.

It's the part of a repair that eventually disappears under paint — but it's also the part that matters.

She's starting to look like Chugga again.

THE CHUGGA PROJECT — PART 3

Sometimes fixing a boat means making it look considerably worse first! 😂

With the rotten timber removed, Chugga was looking a little bare.

The cabin structure, roof and gunwales all needed attention, so it was a case of stripping everything back far enough to make sure we weren't leaving problems hidden underneath.

No shortcuts — if it's rotten, it's coming out.

Next job: putting Chugga back together.

THE CHUGGA PROJECT — PART 2

Well, once we started pulling things apart, we discovered she was hiding a little more than we bargained for. 😬

Water had made its way into the timber around the cabin and window frames, and the rot was considerably more extensive than it looked from the outside.

There wasn't much point patching over this.

Time to start cutting it out and get back to solid timber.

The silicone around these trim tab screws had failed, letting water into the hull.

The result? Rusted trim tabs, water absorption and a much bigger repair than expected.

A good example of why small leaks on boats are worth fixing early!Amazing how much damage a little bit of failed silicone can cause!

Meet "Chugga"

Chugga has found herself a long way from home — Raymond Island to our workshop at Westernport Marina.

And she's come to us for a bit more than a holiday. 😬

This old girl needs some attention around the cabin, roof and timberwork. As anyone with an older boat knows, though, you don't always know exactly what you're dealing with until you start pulling things apart.

And let's just say... Chugga had a few surprises waiting for us.
