Karate Community

Karate Community Experience functional and authentic Japanese Goju [Kensha] Ryu Karate-Do. Welcome to Karate Community.

Karate Community has been providing the Noosa Hinterland and Sunshine Coast with enjoyable, educational, and engaging youth and adult wellness programs for 10 years. We are excited to share this powerful synthesis of personal development and self-protection. Karate Community provides enjoyable, educational, and engaging youth and adult wellness programs. The primary goal of our club is to promote

holistic health. We define this through our Five Pillars of Healthy Well-being. The modern trend with competition karate is not evident in our school. Instead, a relentless search for original and authentic martial art training methods, principles and philosophies are interwoven with contemporary sciences and wellness strategies. Our programs are taught with an emphasis on self-development and self-defence rather than competition. We cultivate a positive community experience though “karate culture”. Karate Community classes include a diverse timetable of activities. Each lesson comprises of the following three strategies:
• Meditative breath control exercises designed to calm the mind, increase respiratory function and awareness, cultivate positive energy and reduce stress.
• Combat art focused drills designed to increase flexibility, condition the body, enhance muscular strength and endurance, correct postural deficiencies and improve our cardiovascular system.
• Paired and group activities that promote mutual respect, positive social behaviour and defensive preparedness.

What does a karate scholarship really mean?

For many young people, it means:
✔ A safe and supportive environment
✔ Improved confidence and resilience
✔ Positive role models
✔ A place to belong

Thanks to the Eumundi & District Community Association (EDCA), four local young people will now have access to all of this through the EDCA Karate Scholarship Programme.

This is what community looks like - people coming together to create real opportunities.

We can’t wait to see these students grow in and out of the dojo 🥋

Introducing our new and improved karate training shirt for all members.

As you can see, it clearly states:
“BEWARE: I KNOW KARATE”

This has now been classified as an “official martial arts disclaimer”, which legally protects us from any action relating to self protection.

✔️ Shirt approved for all ranks
✔️ Has awesome karate practitioner on the back
✔️ Doubles as a conversation starter at Woolworths

Wearing this shirt in public may also deter potential attackers… or at the very least, confuse them long enough for you to escape.

Mandatory for all students from next week. No exceptions.

To order these sweet new threads, drop a comment here with size and quantity 🙏🥋🧔‍♂️

We’re incredibly proud to announce the launch of the
"Eumundi & District Community Association (EDCA) Karate Scholarship Programme" 🥋

With the generous support of EDCA, four young people aged 5–24 will receive scholarships to train in karate - removing financial barriers and creating opportunities for growth, confidence and connection.

Karate is more than just physical activity. It builds resilience, focus, respect and a strong sense of belonging.

This programme is about giving local young people the chance to step into the dojo, be supported, and realise their potential.

A huge thank you to EDCA for backing our community and investing in the next generation.

Karate Community teaches Goju Ryu Karate Do; “the path of the hard and soft empty hands.”

Chojun Miyagi is considered the founder of Goju Ryu Karate. Originally named for the city of its origin, the style known as "Naha-te" would undergo a name change in 1929. Miyagi took the name from a line of the poem "Hakku Kenpo", which roughly means “The Eight Laws of the Fist” and describes the eight precepts of the martial arts. It reads: “Ho wa Gōjū wa Donto su”, translated to “The way of inhaling and exhaling is softness and hardness," or "everything in the universe inhales soft and exhales hard.”

Karate was initially called "toudi", meaning China Hand/Fist. This reinforces the influence of Chinese martial arts on the island. The name evolved when it was exported to mainland Japan in the early 20th century. The word karate-do was chosen in order to emphasise not only its primarily barehanded nature, but also, to stress its moral significance; “kara” also refers to the “lack of all aggressive intention” and evokes the Zen experience of “emptiness”.

Why was i grabbed?

There are lots of reasons a wrist might be grabbed in a personal security setting. For example:
*To transport a person somewhere [against their will]
*Restrain a person with intent of committing a serious crime
*Inhibit mobility or defence
*Stop a counter-attack
*Control range
*Intimidate or dominate
*Set up a take down or throw
*Follow up with a strike
*Take control of a weapon.

Recently we covered many options to handle [;)] a situation like this, including:
1. Evasion - dont get grabbed.
2. Working against the weak gate [thumb]
3. Linear release
4. Rotational release
5. Two-hand support pull/push release
6. Peripheral body part pull/push release
7. Peeling - gyakuwaza [joint locks]
8. Trapping - gyakuwaza [joint locks]
9. Distractions: visual, auditory and physical discomfort
10. Defending incoming strikes
11. Striking while grabbed
12. Combinations of the above
13. Free-play with follow-up defensive techniques

What we practice becomes our reality, and crisis rehearsal and pressure testing are paramount defensive preparedness. So, literally grab your partner and get to training.

Is there any other reason or strategies you can add?
