I was very proud to attend the Ballarat Sports Foundation Scholarship Awards today and celebrate the incredible talent we have in our region.

It was inspiring to see so many dedicated young sportsmen and sportswomen being recognised for their hard work, commitment and achievements. Behind every athlete is a story of early mornings, long training sessions, sacrifices and perseverance and itโ€™s wonderful to see those efforts being supported through the Ballarat Sports Foundation.

As someone who has experienced the journey from grassroots sport to the Olympic stage, I know how important encouragement and support can be along the way. These scholarships help provide opportunities for athletes to pursue their goals and continue striving for excellence.

Congratulations to all recipients. I look forward to following your sporting journeys and seeing what you achieve in the years ahead.

Winter is the perfect time to maintain healthy routines for children.

Swimming provides:
๐Ÿ’™ Regular activity
๐Ÿ’™ Screen-free movement
๐Ÿ’™ Structure and routine
๐Ÿ’™ Social connection and confidence

And with warm indoor pools and supportive instructors, lessons become something children look forward to each week.

However, we also know winter sometimes brings coughs, colds, and sniffles. ๐Ÿคง๐Ÿ˜ท

When children need rest, we encourage families to recover well and return when ready. ๐Ÿ˜ด

We highly encourage you to use our absence/make-up lessons availability to ensure we keep everyone healthy throughout this period. We will always be here to welcome them back with smiles. ๐Ÿ˜€

At Shayne Reese Swimming, weโ€™re proud to create a warm, safe and positive environment for families all winter long.

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช ENDURO CHALLENGE COMPLETE! ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Over the past month, our Silver and Gold Squad swimmers have been working hard to prepare for the annual Shayne Reese Swimming Enduro Challenge.

Our Silver Squad swimmers took on an incredible 800m non-stop swim, while our Gold Squad swimmers completed a massive 1200m non-stop swim. We even had a few determined Silver Squad swimmers step up and tackle the full 1200m distance!

Congratulations to every swimmer who participated. We are so proud of your commitment, determination and resilience. The hard work you've put in over the past month has truly paid off.

Some swimmers loved every minute of the challenge, while others were counting down the laps - but the most important thing is that every single swimmer completed it!

Well done, everyone. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ…

This is a fantastic achievement and a reminder of what can be accomplished through consistent effort and perseverance. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ It's Never Too Late to Learn to Swim - Staff Spotlight Kelly

Most people assume swimming is something you learn as a child. For me, that wasn't the case. I started at Shayne Reese Swimming in November 2020 with very little swimming experience and just enough ability to scrape through my qualifications. I'd never learned to swim properly as a child.

At the time, I was studying a Bachelor of Exercise Science and planned to become a PE teacher. But I loved working at SRS so much that after graduating, I chose to continue doing what I loved rather than pursue my Master's degree.

Back then, I was also a keen runner, having completed several half marathons, a marathon, and an ultramarathon, with plans to keep pushing myself further. However, as my children progressed through their swimming journey and became competitive club swimmers, my focus naturally shifted from my own sporting goals to supporting theirs. I found myself spending less time on running trails and more time poolside.

Wanting to maintain my own physical and mental wellbeing in a way that fit around family life, I began applying the skills I taught my students every day. I taught myself to swim freestyle and backstroke, squeezing in practice sessions between shifts and learning from the guidance and encouragement of some of our experienced teachers.

When I later took on the role of junior coach at my children's swimming club, time became even more precious. Thankfully, I've now found a balance that allows me to fit my own swimming around their training commitments.

What I love most about beginning my own swimming journey is the incredible support and sense of community I've found along the way. It's also given me a whole new level of respect and admiration for my children, my students, and the junior swimmers I coach. Learning to swim as an adult has shown me just how challenging it can be but also just how rewarding.

And now, I've set myself a new goal: completing the Pier to Pub next year.

It's never too late to learn something new, challenge yourself, and discover what you're capable of.

Thanks so much for sharing your journey Kelly! We love having you as part of our team. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

Cold, wet winter days can make it tough to get out the door.

The rain, the extra layers, the dark afternoons - it all adds up, and staying home can feel far easier.

But we hear it all the time from families afterwards: "Weโ€™re so glad we came."

Because once kids are poolside, the mood shifts, the smiles return, the routine clicks back into place and the progress keeps building.

Swimming through winter helps children stay:
๐Ÿ’™ active
๐Ÿ’™ confident
๐Ÿ’™ engaged

With warm indoor pools and supportive instructors, we make it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for the whole family.

Often the hardest part is just getting here but the benefits last well beyond winter.

โ„๏ธ Winter is one of the MOST important times to keep swimming โ„๏ธ

When the colder months arrive, itโ€™s natural for families to question whether to continue swimming lessons but winter is often where the biggest progress happens.

The children who keep swimming through winter are usually the ones who head into summer feeling stronger, safer, more confident and ready to enjoy the water.

Consistency matters.

Skills develop through repetition, familiarity and regular exposure to the water, not just during the warm months.

At Shayne Reese Swimming we believe that summer swimmers are made in winter! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’ฆ Swimming Lessons - Skill Progression & Long-Term Development ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Every swimming lesson is a stepping stone toward confidence, independence, and lifelong water safety. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

Learning to swim isnโ€™t a skill mastered overnight. Just like reading or riding a bike, it develops gradually through consistency, repetition and progression over time.

๐Ÿ’™ Each stage of swimming builds upon the last - from water familiarisation and floating, through to breathing control, stroke development, endurance and advanced water safety skills. These foundations are what create safe, capable and confident swimmers for life.

๐Ÿงก Research from the Griffith Institute for Educational Research highlights that children who participate in ongoing, structured swimming lessons achieve significantly higher levels of aquatic competency than those attending irregularly. Consistent lessons improve vital life-saving skills including floating, treading water, safe breathing, and swimming longer distances confidently.

๐Ÿ’™ Progress in swimming is often made in small moments:
The first relaxed float.
The first independent kick.
The first confident breath.
And suddenly, those small moments become strong, capable swimmers.

๐Ÿงก At Shayne Reese Swimming, we focus on long-term development - nurturing confidence, resilience, technique and independence at every level. Our structured program supports swimmers through every stage of their journey, helping them build skills that last far beyond the pool.

Because swimming lessons arenโ€™t just another activityโ€ฆ

Theyโ€™re an investment in a life skill that could one day save a life. ๐Ÿ’ฆ

๐Ÿ’ฆ Yesterday we recognised International Water Safety Dayโ€ฆ and today we celebrate National Learn to Swim Day Australia! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

Today is all about raising awareness of the importance of swimming lessons, water confidence and lifelong water safety skills for children and families across Australia.

It builds:

๐Ÿงก Strength and resilience
๐Ÿ’™ Skills for life

Consistent, year-round swimming lessons are key to building strong skills and developing capable, confident swimmers. Every lesson matters and every small step forward builds toward lifelong water safety.
