💦 Myles Update - 12 Months Old! 💦

Myles and his family have enjoyed a lovely holiday, which meant a few weeks away from swimming. But he’s back and what a welcome return!

At 12 months old, Myles has been promoted from our Neo classes to Aqua Bubs, our program designed specifically for little swimmers aged 1–2 years.

It’s so wonderful to see that despite his little break, Myles’ love of the water hasn’t changed. In fact, he’s ready to take on a whole new range of skills that complement what he’s learning and developing outside of the pool.

At this age, little ones are becoming increasingly mobile and independent, pulling themselves to stand, cruising along furniture, taking their first steps, using their hands to feed themselves, following simple instructions, pointing to communicate and becoming more curious about how things work.

And we’re seeing those same developmental changes reflected in the pool.

🌊 In Aqua Bubs, Myles is now working on skills such as:

🧡Monkey walking along the pool wall
🧡Holding on and moving sideways
🧡Submerging and swimming towards a parent
🧡Building confidence with independent movement in the water
🧡Developing stronger coordination and body control
🧡Learning to respond to instructions and cues
🧡Continuing to practise safe, positive water experiences

The best part? It's clear he’s so relaxed in the water and having great fun while learning incredibly important lifesaving skills. 🐠💦

Swimming development doesn’t happen in isolation. As babies grow, their physical, cognitive and social skills develop and our lessons evolve alongside them.

We’re so excited to see what the next stage of Myles’ swimming journey brings!

Welcome to Aqua Bubs, Myles! 🧡💙

Little hands, BIG safety skills 🤲

Those little fingers are learning something incredibly important.....how to hold on!
Our Learn to Swim journey starts in our neo level, with simple finger-grip holds while stationary. From there, we progress to gripping while moving through the water, then introduce dive rings and then importantly, T-shirt holds.

Why? Because in an emergency, there may be times when an adult needs to keep their hands free in the water. We want children to understand that they can REACH > GRIP > HOLD on to their adult / the pool edge / another safe surface.

Thank you, little Alexis, for showing us how to do it with ease.

It’s a small skill that can make a BIG difference.

Grip. Hold. Stay safe. 🧡💙

From floating… to surviving 🧡💙

Sometimes the biggest milestones in swimming happen in the simplest moments.

By learning to float independently - an essential skill that builds confidence, body awareness and the ability to stay calm in the water, we can learn important skills for survival.

At Shayne Reese Swimming, we are not just teaching children how to swim laps - we’re building real-life water skills that can help keep them safer.

💙 One skill leads to another.
💙 One milestone builds confidence for the next.
💙 Before you know it, swimming with purpose!

🚫🏊 NO EQUIPMENT WEEK 🏊🚫

This week at Shayne Reese Swimming, we've put our equipment aside to focus on something incredibly important - building true independence and confidence in the water.

While equipment is a fantastic learning tool, it’s equally important for swimmers to develop body awareness, balance, breathing and movement skills without relying on support aids.

Our goal is to help every swimmer:
✨ Feel confident moving through the water independently
✨ Strengthen their natural swimming ability
✨ Build trust in their own skills and capabilities
✨ Develop safer, stronger water confidence

So, you may notice classes looking a little different this week, but behind the fun is purposeful learning that supports long-term swimming development and water safety.

We love seeing our swimmers grow in confidence one splash at a time! 🧡💙

💚💛One last memory from the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games... the Closing Ceremony. 🧡💙

As the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games come to an end, it's hard not to reflect on just how many similarities there have been to my own experience 20 years ago.

Just like many of this year's Australian swimmers, who are heading straight to the Pan Pacific Championships, we didn't have much time to soak it all in. We were preparing for the World Short Course Championships, so once our swimming was finished, and as we were already in Melbourne it was back home, back into training, and then we got to go to the Closing Ceremony.

We didn't get the chance to watch many other sports, but we certainly made the most of celebrating together one last time.

The Closing Ceremony was all about fun, a celebration of what we had all achieved. The pressure of racing was over, everyone could finally relax and the atmosphere was incredible.

One thing that made me smile this year was hearing Delta Goodrem perform You're the Voice. It instantly took me back to Melbourne 2006, when John Farnham himself brought the stadium to life with the same iconic song. Some songs just belong to Australian sporting moments.

There have been plenty of other comparisons too. The next Commonwealth Games after Melbourne were held in Delhi, India and now, after Glasgow, the Games will once again head to India in Ahmedabad in 2030 (the 100th Commonwealth Games).

Of course, our Closing Ceremony had one unforgettable difference, Dame Edna Everage! She set up the theme for the night. The sea of pink gladioli, oversized pink glasses, plenty of laughs and a stadium full of athletes celebrating together are memories I'll never forget. 🌸

Looking back over the past few days has reminded me just how fortunate I was to represent Australia at a home Commonwealth Games.

Thanks for letting me take this little trip down memory lane with you. It's been wonderful reliving these memories 20 years on. 💚💛
