During the past two weeks Como Croquet Club, along with five other metropolitan croquet clubs, hosted Croquet Australia's National Association Croquet Singles Championships and the Eire Cup (Interstate Competition).

Jeff Newcombe was the Como Venue Manager, and he and his crew of volunteers managed all aspects of the delivery throughout the competitions.

Prior to the tournaments much work was carried out by Club members to improve the lawns, freshen up the Club's presentation and develop officiating skills such as referees, umpires, hoop setters and scorers.

Feedback to Como from individuals and the competing State Teams was universally positive. Players were complimentary about the presentation of Como's facility, the quality and speed of the lawns, and the welcoming hospitality.

The Western Australian State Team competed at Como on two days during the Eire Cup. Photos below show most of the Team members in action.

Como Hosts AC Mixed Doubles Championship

Six pairs contested Croquetwest's Association Croquet State Mixed Doubles Championship during the weekend of 14/15 February 2926. Runners up were Dawn Robinson and David Squire (both Moorabinda) with Judy Nicholls(Moorabinda) and Alan Sands (Como) winning the Championship.

Players congratulated the Club on its presentation, lawn quality, top level catering by Richard Cook and Diana Dalzell and their teams, and overall delivery of the tournament by Manager Jeff Newcombe and assistants.

Two recently appointed umpires, James Brown and Dave Ward, officiated along with referees Ross Marshall and Eric Ayling. The tournament also provided members Jane Walker and Shaun O'Brien with the opportunity to enter results though Croquetscores, skills that will be put to good use in the upcoming AC National and Interstate Cup.

Port Bouvard visit to Como – Friday 28/11/1925

Como was the venue for a very enjoyable Ricochet match against the independent Port Bouvard Croquet Club. Sixteen players making up four teams from each club nicely filled our four lawns with no need for double banking.

Unusually, the Port Bouvard Club only play Ricochet (no golf or AC) and so the games were hard fought and in good spirit, with Como just coming out ahead by 2 games.

Como provided a veritable feast of refreshments, much appreciated by the visitors who also commented favorably on the venue and the quality of our lawns. The event was voted a success with players looking forward to a return match.

The Como Croquet Club Ladies Doubles (Susan Sands Shield) was played on Sunday, 21 September 2025. It was a beautiful day with plenty of competitive play on the lawns. Congratulations to the winners, Karen Caple and Shirley Hansen, and to the runners-up, Leonie Moore and Barbara Sherriff.

Although Susan Sands was unable to attend, she arranged for Alan Sands to present the shield on her behalf. Susan has made an outstanding contribution to the sport over many years. She has been a remarkable leader, coach, and competitor, mentoring countless players and working tirelessly to grow croquet at both club and state levels. The tournament has now been established as an annual event, and it was a great honour to see the shield that bears her name presented to the winners—a fitting recognition of her dedication to promoting and supporting women’s croquet.
