Many parents picture drowning happening in deep water, but incidents can occur in swimming pools, bathtubs, buckets, ponds, rivers, and even shallow water.

The greatest risk isn't the depth of the waterโ€”it's a moment without supervision.

Water safety is built on layers:
๐Ÿ’™ Active supervision
๐Ÿ’™ Secure barriers
๐Ÿ’™ Water safety education
๐Ÿ’™ Swimming and survival skills
๐Ÿ’™ Emergency preparedness

No single layer is enough on its own.

Take a moment today to identify water hazards around your home and make sure everyone caring for your child understands the importance of constant, close supervision around water.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Save this reel as a reminder and share it with a parent or grandparent.

The goal isn't to raise a perfect swimmer overnight. The goal is to help your child become safer, more confident, more competent around water - one small step at a time.

๐Ÿ’™ 1. Small moments add up A few minutes of playful water practice, bath-time activities, or talking about water safety can make a meaningful difference over time.

๐Ÿ’™ 2. Every child learns at their own pace Some children take to the water quickly, while others need more time to build confidence. Progress isn't a race.

๐Ÿ’™ 3. Missed lessons don't define progress Life happens. Holidays, illness, busy schedules, and family commitments are all part of parenting. What matters is getting back into the routine when you can.

๐Ÿ’™ 4. Confidence is built through positive experiences Children don't need every swim session to be perfect. Enjoying the water, feeling supported, and celebrating small wins helps build long-term confidence.

๐Ÿ’™ 5. Consistency beats intensity Regular exposure to water and practising skills over time is often more valuable than occasional big efforts. Learning happens through repetition.

๐Ÿ’ฆ As babies kick, splash and move through the water, their brain is creating billions of new neural connections. Every movement of their arms and legs helps develop coordination, body awareness, balance and motor control.

๐ŸงฌWater also engages the senses in a completely unique way.
Babies are feeling:
๐Ÿ’ง the tactile sensation of water on their skin
๐Ÿ’ง the resistance of the water against their movements
๐Ÿ’ง changes in balance and body position
๐Ÿ’ง movement in every direction at once

๐Ÿง  This full-body sensory experience helps strengthen the connection between the brain and body while building confidence, movement patterns and early water familiarity.

Splashing isnโ€™t โ€œjust playโ€โ€ฆ itโ€™s learning, development and exploration all at once. ๐Ÿฉต

๐Ÿ›‘ Many toddlers become confident in water before they become truly competent in it.

๐Ÿ’ž Loving the water, splashing, jumping in, or happily participating in swim lessons are all wonderful signs of growing confidence โ€” but water competence is built through consistent skill development, repetition, supervision, and experience over time.

๐Ÿ‘ถ For young children, competence means developing the ability to:

๐Ÿ’ฆ respond calmly
๐Ÿ’ฆ float and recover
๐Ÿ’ฆ turn independently
๐Ÿ’ฆ move with purpose
๐Ÿ’ฆ safely enter and exit
๐Ÿ’ฆ build problem-solving skills in the water

Confidence is an important part of learning to swimโ€ฆ but confidence alone is not water safety ๐Ÿฆบ

๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ This is why practising skills regularly, both during and between lessons, can make such a difference in a childโ€™s long-term water competence and safety awareness.

๐Ÿ‘ถ 1โ€“2 year olds are at the greatest risk as they become more mobile, curious, and independent around water โ€” often before they have the skills to save themselves.

๐Ÿšจ Most incidents happen silently and quickly. Swimming pools are the most common location, followed by bathtubs, rivers, and creeks.

Thatโ€™s why water safety needs layers of protection:
๐Ÿ’™ Active supervision
๐Ÿ’™ Secure barriers
๐Ÿ’™ Water familiarity
๐Ÿ’™ Swimming and survival skills
๐Ÿ’™ Ongoing practice

๐Ÿ’ฆTeaching children what to do in an emergency situation โ€” like turning around, floating, holding on, and swimming back to safety โ€” can help build confidence and safer responses around water.

๐Ÿ—‚ My โ€œ5 Skills to Swimโ€ Flashcards were designed to help parents and teachers build foundational swim and water safety skills through simple, progressive activities for young children.

๐Ÿฆบ Because every child deserves the chance to learn life-saving water skills early.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Watching little ones build confidence in the water is something special ๐Ÿ’™

At just 1 year old, this little swimmer is already learning important foundation skills through play, repetition and positive experiences in the water:

โœ…๏ธ Putting their face in the water
โœ…๏ธ Opening their eyes underwater
โœ…๏ธ Jumping from the bottom
โœ…๏ธ Grabbing and holding the wall

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ These may look like simple gamesโ€ฆ but they are the building blocks for future swimming and water safety skills

๐ŸขThe goal at this age isnโ€™t perfect technique โ€” itโ€™s confidence, familiarity, independence and safe water experiences in a fun, supportive environment ๐Ÿ’ฆ

๐Ÿ’ฆ โ€‹Did you know that water confidence starts before your child ever sets foot in a public pool?

๐Ÿ‘ถ โ€‹As parents, we want our toddlers to be safe around water, but signing up for lessons can feel overwhelming, expensive, and stressful. You might worry if theyโ€™ll cry, if theyโ€™re actually learning anything, or if you're doing enough to keep them safe.

๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ โ€‹Here is the truth: teaching your 1โ€“4 year old to swim isnโ€™t about perfect freestyle strokes yet.
โœ…๏ธ Itโ€™s about 5 foundational safety skills that build genuine water competence.

โ€‹By breaking it down into simple, bite-sized steps, you can remove the fear and build their confidence right from the start.

Why these 5๏ธโƒฃ skills matter:

โ€‹Reduces Panic: Teaches toddlers how to react calmly if they unexpectedly submerge.
โ€‹Builds Breath Control: Stops them from swallowing water or inhaling in a moment of surprise.
โ€‹Creates Independence: Shifts them from relying on floaties to trusting their own body's buoyancy.

๐Ÿ“‹ โ€‹Want to take the guesswork out of water safety? Iโ€™ve mapped out these 5 essential skills into easy-to-use, parent-friendly flashcards (just like the ones in the photo!) so you can teach your little one with total confidence.
