ABOUT US
Latrobe City Roller Derby (LCRD) was formed in July 2010 via a Facebook group looking for interested participants who just wanted to attempt to roller skate. By Christmas that same year the skaters achieved their ‘white star’ with the help of Melbourne leagues. After 7 years, the league had developed into a community of dedicated skaters, dynamic trainers and passionate members from all walks of life from all reaches of the Gippsland Ranges - from the Strzelecki, Baw Baw, Latrobe Valley and beyond. Now, we continue to be a welcoming, developmental and growing club spanning across this region and in to Eastern Melbourne. To reflect this growth and better capture our membership and the communities that support us, LCRD was rebranded in September of 2017 to be known as Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby. We follow the rules of Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), as do all other leagues within Australia. In accordance with WFTDA, we assess our skaters using the 'Star' system, as do most roller derby leagues within Australia and the United States. GRRD is an incorporated league, and has a fully functioning volunteer executive committee.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, with this year’s theme focusing on changing the narrative on su***de by starting the conversation.

This theme calls on us all to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations about su***de.

In the sporting world there has historically been a stigma around mental health. Here at Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby, we believe having open conversations is the first step, and as such we have recently utilised grant funding from the Change Our Game initiative to increase the number of trainers certified in Mental Health First Aid. We want to make sure our club members feel safe and can have the right resources no matter where they are.

We enjoyed a chance to reflect on our progress as a club during the 2025-2026 financial year at our AGM today. A few key takeaways:

- a huge thank you to our outgoing committee member Mellana Sarton who has contributed in a significant way for many years to our club including SkateFit venue coordination, Skatefit program coordination, website updates, RevSport administrative support, strategic planning and governance contributions and supporting our adult roller derby team as a bench manager. We look forward to continuing to have her around in various capacities moving foward and thanked her for her contribution to the GRRD Committee today.

- a second thank you to Sarah Paynter (Rah) who has also contributed to the committee over the past few years in various ways - we appreciate your support with behind-the-scenes tasks and look forward to continuing to skate with you!

- thanks to the support of GippSport we have seen an increase in funds gained through grants, and are really benefiting in a significant way from the administrative support we are receiving from Trevor!

Happy Wear it Purple Day!

Our skaters will be celebrating on Sunday at Gippsland Pride’s skate session at our club’s birthplace STADIUM 34..

Come on down and say hi, get a photo taken at our Photo Booth and have a skate!

Happy Wear It Purple Day, Gippsland! 💜

Wear it Purple Day is about making sure every LGBTQIA+ young person knows they're seen, supported and never alone. This year, we want Sunday to be about courage, whether that's wearing your brightest outfit, consider trying roller skating for the first time, or simply showing up and making a new connection.

There are some extraordinary events happening right across our region this week, and this weekend especially, with so much to choose from. We're beyond excited to be welcoming community to this Sunday, from 1pm to 4pm.

There's an amazing array of stallholders, services and community groups getting involved in this special community event. Picture tunes, chats, nibbles, freebies and giveaways, roller skating and on-wheels activities for those keen to join in, and a genuinely good opportunity to connect and recognise this important day on the LGBTQIA+ calendar.

🟣When: Sunday 30 August, 1pm to 4pm.
Please note, early entry isn't permitted, so we'll see you from 1pm onwards
🟣Where: Stadium 34, 34 Bell St, Moe

A huge thank you to Quantum Support Services our newest event partner, for contributing to our event costs. We're also so grateful to Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby for sponsoring our photo booth, Latrobe Youth Space for supporting transport to and from Moe train station throughout the event, and Stadium 34 for contributing to venue hire costs. This event simply wouldn't be possible without this incredible community support.

Whether you're lacing up skates, grabbing a cuppa, or just here to soak up the day, we can't wait to see you there.
