Four weeks ago, I took on the role of promoting lawn bowls right here at Camperdown.

​To kick things off, I shared a simple video asking players a straightforward question: Why do you play bowls?

​The response blew us away. We were flooded with heartfelt stories from local members, Australia wide and comments pouring in from players across Scotland, England, and South Africa!

​In just one week, the video reached over 38,000 views.

Bowls Australia organised a survey through Latrobe University.

​They surveyed around 4,000 club members across 100 Australian clubs to look into participant motivation and wellbeing.

The findings strongly backed up what long-time bowlers already know—playing bowls offers a rare combination of physical, mental, and social benefits:

​Low-impact physical exercise: A single game involves miles of walking, constant bending, stretching, and core engagement, improving balance, coordination, and flexibility without joint strain.

​Mental sharpness: The strategic nature of the game keeps the mind active, requiring focus, tactical planning, and hand-eye coordination.

​Social connection: Social isolation is one of the biggest drivers of poor mental health, particularly in older adults. Club membership builds strong community ties, combatting loneliness and boosting everyday mental wellbeing.

​It is proof that you don't need high-intensity cardio to reap massive overall health benefits!

The yellow kitty in lawn bowls is the ultimate prize. It is every bowler's target, their obsession, and their greatest hope.

​In truth, the kitty is the absolute Queen of the Green—a majestic golden orb that commands total, undivided attention. Without Queen Kitty, twenty players would just be rolling heavy plastic spheres at nothing, looking deeply confused.

There would be no game, no tactical drama, and certainly no glory.

​We honour you, oh magnificent golden orb! We bow to your neon glow, aim our bias in desperate prayer, and spend entire Saturdays trying to gently cuddle a tiny piece of plastic. You sit there completely unbothered while we suffer mid-game existential crises over a two-inch gap.

Long live Queen Kitty—small, bright yellow, and ruling the green with absolute authority.
