Competing in the Men's Division, the Coral Kings represent something special about rugby in Far North Queensland, the ability of sport to bring cultures and communities together.

Formed from players across Cairns' local rugby union community, the Kings bring together a multicultural squad with 𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫, 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥, 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞.

For the Coral Kings, Cairns 7s is about more than competition.

It's an opportunity to represent their communities, bring local players together, support the growth of the tournament and enjoy rugby alongside teams and supporters from across Australia and the Pacific.

🏉 Exciting things are on the horizon for Cairns rugby!
I recently caught up with AJ to discuss preparations for the Fiji Airways Cairns 7s Rugby Tournament which will be held at Stan Williams Park between 30-31 October 2026.

This year's tournament is shaping up to be the biggest yet, with 36 teams set to compete, including 24 men's teams and 12 women's teams from across Australia and the Pacific. With both interstate and international participation, the event promises two days of fast-paced rugby action and outstanding competition.

Teams will be vying for a share of an impressive $50,000 prize pool, attracting some of the region's best rugby talent while showcasing Cairns as a premier destination for major sporting events.

Events like the Cairns 7s not only provide fantastic sporting opportunities but also deliver significant benefits for our local economy, tourism sector and community.

I look forward to seeing players, officials, supporters and visitors from across Australia and the Pacific in Cairns this October for what is sure to be another fantastic tournament.

Others carry something much deeper.

So when they take the field in Cairns this October, they won't simply be playing rugby.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲, 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞. 🇫🇯

Sometimes it's worth looking back to appreciate how far a journey has travelled.

In 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐, the 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝟕𝐬 made its way from the rugby fields of Cairns onto the floor of the Queensland Parliament.

Speaking after attending the tournament, Member for Cairns Michael Healy MP reflected on an event then only in its second year - bringing together 20 teams, 220 players and a growing celebration of rugby, culture, community and connection.

He also shared a thought about its future:

“𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝟕𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡…”

Four years later, it's special to look back at those words.

What began as 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝟕𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 continued in 2022 before evolving into 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝟕𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑.

The tournament paused in 2024 while Stan Williams Park underwent its redevelopment.

Then came the return in 2025.

And now, in 2026, as our city celebrates 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝟏𝟓𝟎, we're preparing for another milestone of our own:

🌴 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Five editions shaped by players, coaches, Team Managers, volunteers, supporters, partners and a community willing to believe in what this event could become.

Along the way, a local and regional rugby tournament has begun connecting teams from across Australia and the Pacific with 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝.

And with that evolution has come a bigger purpose.

Not simply bringing people to Cairns to play rugby...

But using rugby as a platform to connect 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦, 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 - supporting our accommodation, aviation and tourism partners, local businesses and the wider visitor economy while creating an experience people can take home with them.

There's still a long road ahead.

We're still learning.
Still improving.
Still building.

And that's part of the story too.

To everyone who has carried a ball, coached a team, managed a squad, volunteered their time, supported from the sideline, partnered with the event or helped behind the scenes since those early Bula 7s days:

𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐱 𝐑𝐮𝐠𝐛𝐲 𝟕𝐬 is a Premier and Elite-level invitational program preparing to make its 𝐅𝐢𝐣𝐢 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 Cairns 7s debut in 2026.

With its registration completed and place officially secured, 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐱 𝐑𝐮𝐠𝐛𝐲 𝟕𝐬 will bring an expected travelling group of 15–20 players, staff and supporters north to Cairns.

But Cairns is not the end of their journey.

The tournament forms part of Phoenix’s preparation for the Dubai 7s international invitational - an opportunity to test combinations, build cohesion and compete against teams from Australia and across the Pacific.

Their journey reflects what Cairns 7s is working to become:
